Downtown LA Sizzles in 99-Degree Blast as Weekend Cooldown Looms

Downtown Los Angeles is starting Wednesday near 74°F, but the relatively mild pre-dawn air is a brief fake-out: sunshine will drive temperatures to about 99°F by midafternoon. The heat will remain dangerous through Friday, with warm nights offering limited relief and a more meaningful cooldown not arriving until the weekend.

Wednesday Brings The Week’s Peak Heat

The National Weather Service forecasts sunny skies and south-southeast winds of 0 to 10 mph, with temperatures rising through the 90s before peaking near 99°F. Inland valleys will run hotter, with some areas expected to reach well into the triple digits, while the chance of rain remains near zero.

Heat And Ozone Make Afternoons Tougher

An Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through 8 p.m. Friday across much of the region. The warning calls for daytime highs between 92°F and 102°F in many areas and warns of a high risk of heat illness, especially for young children, older adults, people without air conditioning and anyone working or exercising outdoors.

The South Coast AQMD has also issued an Air Quality Alert through 8 p.m. Friday because ozone pollution is expected to rise during the afternoon and early evening. Sensitive groups should check local air quality before extended outdoor activity, and everyone should consider moving strenuous plans to the morning or evening.

The latest forecast is a sharper turn from Hoodline’s earlier outlook, which described the heat building into Wednesday and Thursday but noted that no advisory was then in effect. The new warning and ozone alert make the afternoon heat a health concern, not merely an uncomfortable commute.

Limited Relief Until The Weekend

Thursday should remain hot at 98°F with partly sunny skies, followed by another 99°F Friday under mostly sunny conditions. Overnight lows around 74°F to 75°F will keep evenings warmer than usual and offer only modest relief.

Temperatures ease to about 93°F Saturday, 88°F Sunday and 85°F Monday, with sunny skies and no rain in the forecast. Tuesday remains mostly sunny near 85°F, marking a sharp break from the triple-digit heat affecting inland communities through Friday.

During the warning, residents should drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned spaces when possible, limit strenuous activity during the hottest hours and check on neighbors who may need help. Children and pets should never be left in unattended vehicles, and outdoor plans should be scaled back if air quality reaches unhealthy levels.
