A driver died early Wednesday after his vehicle slammed into a barrier wall and flipped while navigating a curve on the ramp connecting westbound Interstate 20 to Interstate 520 in Richmond County. Deputies arrived at the crash scene near Exit 196 at 1:39 a.m., and the man later died from his injuries. The Richmond County Sheriff's Office said no other vehicles were involved.
The sheriff's office has identified the driver only as an adult man; his name has not been released to the public, as reported by The Georgia Sun. Investigators have not released the cause of the crash, and the investigation remains open, per the sheriff's office. The stretch of ramp where the vehicle overturned funnels traffic between two of the region's busiest interstates, and the closure that followed prompted a major traffic alert.
Westbound Lanes Shut Down as Crews Cleared the Scene
Following the crash, 511 Georgia issued an alert indicating that all westbound I-20 lanes at the I-520 interchange were blocked, urging drivers toward alternate routes while crews worked the scene. The closure came on a corridor that Georgia Department of Transportation data shows carries roughly 75,000 vehicles a day through the Augusta metro area, making Exit 196 one of the region's heaviest freight and commuter nexuses. That high volume raises the risk of secondary congestion whenever a ramp closes, even briefly, for a crash investigation.
The interchange itself has a substantial engineering history. The Georgia Department of Transportation completed a $191 million reconstruction of the I-20/I-520 interchange in October 2009, expanding travel lanes and adding flyover bridges to manage high-volume ramp transfers. More recently, Reeves Construction Company finished a $1.27 million asphalt resurfacing project on I-20 between Exit 194 and Exit 196 in late 2025, work that can affect road friction and lane striping on the approach to the interchange.
A Rough Stretch for Richmond County Roads
Wednesday's fatality adds to a difficult run of deadly crashes across Richmond County this month. Just a week earlier, a head-on collision on Washington Road killed a veteran Richmond County Sheriff's Office deputy and a local resident, according to The Augusta Press. The I-20/I-520 interchange itself has proven hazardous before. In February, a multi-vehicle incident near the same interchange sent a Richmond County Sheriff's deputy to the hospital after a stationary patrol vehicle assisting with an earlier accident was struck from behind, per a report from WRDW. Rising Speed-Related Deaths Across Georgia
The crash also lands amid a troubling statewide trend. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data further shows that speeding-related fatalities in Georgia surged nearly 35 percent over five years, climbing from 260 deaths in 2019 to 349 in 2023 — a factor frequently cited in single-vehicle rollovers on curved highway ramps, though investigators have not yet said what caused Wednesday's crash.
Under Georgia law, O.C.G.A. § 40-6-273 requires drivers to immediately report any crash resulting in injury, death, or at least $500 in property damage to local police or the county sheriff, a requirement that triggers the kind of crash reconstruction now underway in Richmond County. The Georgia Department of Transportation has also expanded its Intelligent Transportation System along I-20 and I-520 in Augusta, adding closed-circuit cameras, vehicle detection sensors, and dynamic message signs tied to the 511 platform to help operators spot freeway blockages faster.
