An injured person stranded along the steep, forested bank of the Little Miami River near the State Route 48 bridge was located Sunday only after the Warren County Sheriff's Office launched an aerial drone to pinpoint their position, and crews then used a fire ladder truck to haul them to safety before airlifting them to a hospital.
Firefighters used a ladder truck and basket to rescue the injured person from the riverbank, according to WKRC. Union Township Fire Rescue reported that emergency crews initially struggled to find the injured person along the riverbank until the sheriff's office deployed the drone to zero in on the exact location, a step that proved critical given the dense foliage and steep slopes common along that stretch of the river.
Once the victim was spotted, crews faced another obstacle: the terrain was too steep and inaccessible for a straightforward ground rescue. Responders turned to Deerfield Township Fire Rescue's Ladder 57, positioning the apparatus on the SR 48 bridge deck to perform a specialized “pick off” extraction, lifting the patient from the riverbank up to the bridge.
A Multi-Agency Response Along a Protected Waterway
After the ladder-truck extraction, the injured patient was transferred directly to Premier Health Miami Valley CareFlight and airlifted to a regional hospital, per Union Township Fire Rescue's account. The operation drew together Union Township Fire Rescue, Deerfield Township Fire Rescue, Miami Valley CareFlight, the Warren County Sheriff's Office, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol, reflecting how many agencies it took to reach one person on a difficult stretch of riverbank.
It remains unclear how the individual came to be injured on the riverbank — whether from a fall from the bridge, a hiking accident, or a boating or kayaking incident — and their condition following the CareFlight transport has not been disclosed.
Deerfield Township Fire Rescue noted that while its Ladder 57 and heavy rescue crews were committed to the mutual aid call in Union Township, the department's remaining staff simultaneously handled two separate 911 calls back home, an illustration of how thinly stretched local crews can be during a complex technical rescue.
Why the Terrain Made This Rescue So Difficult
The Little Miami River corridor is no ordinary waterway. It was designated Ohio's first State Scenic River in 1969 and a National Wild and Scenic River in 1973, protecting more than 100 miles of corridor marked by steep, heavily forested gorges and cliffs, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Those same qualities that make the river a popular destination for paddlers and hikers also make its banks notoriously hard to search and access in an emergency.
State rules governing the river reflect that same concern for safety: under Chapter 1501:47-7 of the Ohio Administrative Code, watercraft on the Little Miami River in Warren County are barred from creating a wake to protect paddlers, swimmers, and the shoreline. Local agencies have leaned increasingly on technology to compensate for the terrain — public safety drone teams along the Warren and Clermont county stretches of the river have been integrated into search-and-rescue operations since July 2021, per Loveland Local News, specifically to search shaded or inaccessible bank areas that ground crews can't easily reach.
A Familiar Partnership Between Neighboring Departments
The bridge that served as the rescue platform reopened in December 2022 after extensive structural rehabilitation, giving Ladder 57 a stable aerial position over the river during Sunday's operation. Union Township Fire Rescue and Deerfield Township Fire Rescue maintain a routine mutual aid agreement across Warren County, having previously worked together on major emergencies, including a fatal I-71 head-on crash in January and a fatal single-vehicle crash in South Lebanon days later. That established partnership meant both departments already had practiced protocols in place for exactly the kind of specialized, multi-agency response Sunday's rescue demanded.
