Kenneth Stiltner, 53, died Tuesday from injuries he sustained more than a week earlier when a GMC Acadia struck him head-on while he was riding his bicycle on Albemarle Road near Hollirose Drive in east Charlotte. The crash happened around 4:50 a.m. on July 31, and Stiltner was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead more than a week later, according to officials.
According to WCNC, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's investigation into the crash is still active, and no charges have been filed in the case. Preliminary findings from the City of Charlotte indicate the GMC Acadia driver was traveling west in the left westbound lane of Albemarle Road when Stiltner was riding his bicycle east in that same westbound lane, facing oncoming traffic, resulting in a head-on collision that ejected him onto the pavement. The crash occurred within the department's Hickory Grove Division.
Visibility Factors Cited by Investigators
CMPD officers and Crime Scene Search investigators noted that Stiltner was not wearing a helmet and that his bicycle was not equipped with a front headlight when the collision happened before dawn, per the city's release. Pre-dawn darkness significantly reduces a cyclist's visibility to oncoming drivers on multi-lane arterials like Albemarle Road.
Under North Carolina General Statutes § 20-129(e), bicycles ridden at night on public roads must have a lighted front lamp visible from at least 300 feet, along with a rear reflex mirror and either a red rear light visible from 300 feet or bright reflective clothing, according to analysis from Raleigh Bike Lawyer. Separately, state law under General Statutes § 20-171.1 only requires bicycle helmets for riders under 16, meaning adult cyclists like Stiltner faced no statutory helmet mandate, as noted by Charlotte NC Car Accident Lawyers. Legal analysts cited in that same review note that helmet non-use by an adult cannot serve as sole grounds for contributory negligence under state law.
Detectives Seek Witnesses

A Corridor Already Flagged for Danger
Albemarle Road is designated as part of Charlotte's High Injury Network, a subset of city corridors that transportation planners have identified as experiencing a disproportionate concentration of fatal and severe traffic crashes, according to Autoclass Magazine. The city's Vision Zero initiative targets engineering fixes and enforcement along those flagged corridors. Citywide, severe-injury collisions rose to 111 in 2025, up from 93 the year before, and fatal crashes climbed to 81, per Charlotte's Vision Zero annual report as reported by WBTV.
Pedestrians and bicyclists accounted for nearly 30 percent of all traffic collisions resulting in fatal or severe injuries in Charlotte during 2025, despite making up a small fraction of total commuters, that same report found. The Dangerous by Design 2026 national report ranked the Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia metro area 50th among the nation's 101 largest metro areas for pedestrian safety, recording 287 pedestrian deaths between 2020 and 2024, according to Sustain Charlotte. That report also found the regional pedestrian fatality rate rose to 2.07 deaths per 100,000 residents during that five-year window.
Statewide, motor vehicles strike more than 850 bicyclists across North Carolina each year, resulting in roughly 20 bicyclist fatalities annually, according to data cited by Harman Law. The state's Department of Transportation runs an annual “Watch for Me NC” campaign aimed at raising driver and cyclist safety awareness.
Echoes of a Prior Albemarle Road Death
Stiltner's death bears a resemblance to an earlier Albemarle Road fatality, in which 39-year-old cyclist Stephen Bradley Lawson was also struck head-on in a left lane while riding at night without marker lights. CMPD's investigation into Stiltner's death remains open, with no criminal charges filed to date while detectives continue analyzing vehicle dynamics and evidence.
