A 45-year-old man was shot and killed in East Oakland yesterday afternoon, becoming the 33rd homicide investigated by Oakland police so far this year. The man was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the 800 block of 75th Avenue around 3:30 p.m. and was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Oakland police have not released the victim's name or his place of residence, according to The Mercury News. Investigators also have not said whether the man was shot from a passing vehicle or by someone who confronted him on the street, and a motive for the killing remains under investigation.
The shooting adds to a homicide count that, while still rising through the summer, remains below last year's pace. Oakland police had investigated 42 homicides by the same point in 2025, compared with 33 so far this year, per the same account. It is the latest in a string of East Oakland shootings Hoodline has tracked this year, including a fatal shooting on Tesla Drive in June that marked the city's 24th homicide of the year.
A City Trending Toward Fewer Killings, But Not Without Setbacks
The East Oakland shooting arrives against a backdrop of significant citywide progress on homicides. Oakland recorded 67 homicides in 2025 — its lowest total in 25 years, a 22% drop from the 86 homicides logged in 2024 and half of the post-pandemic peak of 134 in 2021, according to The Guardian. Even so, violent crime in the city has long been concentrated in East Oakland, where council districts account for a disproportionate share of citywide homicides and shootings relative to population, per Wikipedia's entry on crime in Oakland.
City officials credit part of the multi-year decline to the Department of Violence Prevention's Operation Ceasefire-Lifeline strategy, which sends life coaches and violence interrupters to engage people identified as being at the highest risk of gun violence involvement, as reported by AP News. In May, federal officials announced $1.039 million in Community Project Funding to hire additional life coaches and expand street-level interventions under that program, according to the U.S. House of Representatives.
Funding Pressures and Leadership Gaps Loom Over Prevention Efforts
That federal boost comes as the Department of Violence Prevention navigates financial headwinds after the expiration of its state CalVIP grant and broader changes to federal grant funding, the City of Oakland has said. The strain adds uncertainty to a program city leaders point to as central to sustaining recent homicide reductions even as individual East Oakland shootings continue.
Oakland police, meanwhile, are operating under interim leadership. Former Police Chief Floyd Mitchell left OPD in December after 18 months on the job, leaving Interim Chief James Beere in charge of the department's command structure heading into this year, according to KTVU. The city has also expanded its investigative toolkit, with the City Council approving a two-year, $2.25 million contract in December to grow Oakland's network of Flock Safety automated license plate reader cameras, which logged more than 638 million license plate reads across the city in 2025, per KQED.
