El Paso’s animal welfare spotlight is on Saturday night as the Humane Society of El Paso brings shelter dogs and cats into living rooms across the Borderland. The 33rd annual “Happiness Happens Here” telethon pairs adoption stories with a fundraising push for the animals that still need care, treatment, and a place to call home.
The seven-hour broadcast runs from 4 to 11 p.m. on KVIA ABC-7, with live segments highlighting animals in the El Paso community that are waiting for forever homes. KVIA ABC-7 reports that viewers can donate through the telethon’s online page, vote for Team Dog or Team Cat, or call (915) 642-9955.
Why The Fundraiser Matters
The Humane Society of El Paso says its daily work includes medical care, food, shelter, and enrichment for homeless animals. The organization’s telethon page says HSEP cared for more than 5,000 animals in 2025, helped nearly 2,236 shelter animals reach adoption day, and relied on more than 50,000 volunteer hours. The private nonprofit also says it receives no city, state, or federal funding.
Then there is the friendly side quest: Team Dog versus Team Cat. Team Dog won last year’s challenge, according to KLAQ, giving this year’s telethon a little extra bragging-rights energy alongside the adoption stories and donation appeals.
