El Paso is heading into a classic desert heat day, with clear skies early Tuesday and temperatures around 79 degrees before the afternoon pushes near 101. The forecast calls for bright sunshine, light south-southwest winds, and little chance of rain across the city.
The latest outlook from the National Weather Service keeps Tuesday mostly dry in the Rio Grande Valley, although isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible elsewhere in the region, particularly western New Mexico. No watches, warnings or advisories are in effect for El Paso or surrounding areas.
Heat Peaks Tuesday Afternoon
Temperatures are expected to climb through the 90s by late morning and reach around 100 to 101 degrees from midafternoon into early evening. Southwest winds should stay near 7 mph, but the combination of intense sun and triple-digit heat will make outdoor errands and exercise a slog.
Storm Chances Return Wednesday Night
Wednesday will remain mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 98 degrees before temperatures ease slightly in the afternoon. The bigger change arrives Wednesday night, when there is a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms, along with southwest wind gusts that could reach 23 mph.
Those storms may bring brief heavy rain, sudden outflow winds and localized flash-flooding concerns, especially in mountain areas. Even places that miss the rain can see fast-changing conditions nearby, so outdoor plans should include a quick forecast check before heading out.
Hot, But Gradually Cooler, Through Monday
Thursday is forecast to reach 95 degrees, followed by highs near 96 Friday, Saturday and Sunday, then around 97 Monday. Rain chances remain in the forecast Thursday night, rise again Friday night and Saturday, and taper to a slight chance Sunday night.
For Tuesday, the simplest plan is the safest one: limit prolonged afternoon exposure, drink plenty of water, and keep an eye on anyone or any pets left in the heat. The weekend will not be cool, but it should be less punishing than Tuesday before the monsoon moisture brings a better chance of rain.
