A 75-year-old El Paso woman was killed Thursday when a Honda Civic slammed into the back of a trailer on Interstate 10, and deputies arrested the driver of the vehicle towing it on a DWI charge involving a child passenger.
The crash happened on eastbound I-10 near mile marker 2, according to a sheriff's Facebook statement. Investigators say a white GMC pickup was towing a flatbed trailer carrying a silver Dodge pickup when the Honda struck the rear of the trailer and the transported truck. The Honda passenger, identified as Silvia Resendez of El Paso, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the Honda driver was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.
Driver Arrested After Deputies Report Intoxication
Deputies identified the GMC driver as 29-year-old Victor Alonso Saucedo-Torres and said he was intoxicated at the time of the collision. He was arrested, booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility, and charged with driving while intoxicated with a child passenger younger than 15, according to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office. His bond was set at $7,500.
Texas Charge Is A State Jail Felony
Texas Penal Code Section 49.045 makes it a state jail felony to operate a motor vehicle while intoxicated when a passenger younger than 15 is inside, according to the Texas Penal Code. The charge is separate from any additional offenses prosecutors could consider if the crash investigation produces further evidence.
Special Traffic Investigators have taken over the case and are continuing to reconstruct the collision. Resendez's next of kin have been notified, authorities said.
