New York City is waking up to rain, fog and a soggy forecast Monday, with showers and thunderstorms expected to continue through the afternoon. Temperatures near 74 degrees early will rise only to around 80 before slipping during the day, while humid air keeps conditions feeling distinctly tropical in the least fun possible way.
A Flood Watch is in effect across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island through Monday evening. The National Weather Service says repeated rounds of heavy rain could create flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
Heavy Rain Could Complicate The Monday Commute
Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are possible across the city, with localized downpours producing rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour. South to southwest winds will run around 12 to 15 mph, with stronger gusts possible, as thunderstorms move through in waves.
The heaviest activity is expected from Monday morning into the afternoon, with showers and thunderstorms gradually becoming less widespread from west to east later in the day. Drivers should avoid entering flooded roadways, since water depth can be difficult to judge and conditions may worsen quickly beneath intense downpours.
Beach Conditions Turn Dangerous
New York City's ocean beaches also face a high risk of rip currents and a high surf threat through Monday evening. Surf is expected to reach roughly 6 to 10 feet, making the water hazardous even when skies briefly brighten between storms.
Swimmers should stay near lifeguards and avoid the water if officials post closures or warnings. The combination of large surf, strong currents and thunderstorms makes Monday a poor day for casual ocean plans.
Tuesday Brings A Brief Weather Break
Showers and thunderstorms remain likely Monday night, mainly before 8 p.m., followed by partly cloudy skies and a low near 70 degrees. Tuesday should be mostly sunny and calmer, with a high around 80 and light northeast winds.
The unsettled pattern returns Wednesday and Thursday, when scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible and highs remain near 80 to 83 degrees. Friday and Saturday look warmer, with highs in the mid-80s and renewed chances for afternoon storms, while Sunday stays mostly sunny with a high near 83.
