An inmate died Saturday at the El Paso County Detention Facility after detention officers found the person unresponsive during a routine housing-floor check. The death is the fourth involving the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office in 2026, with three occurring inside detention facilities and one involving the Law Enforcement Bureau. Officials said there were no indications of foul play at this time.
The inmate was discovered at approximately 2:40 a.m., according to KVIA. Medical staff and the El Paso Fire Department began lifesaving measures, but the inmate was later pronounced deceased.
The person’s identity, age and cause of death have not been released. The investigation remains active, so the initial statement about foul play should not be read as a final determination about the cause or manner of death.
Three Agencies And State Regulators Are Reviewing The Case
The Texas Rangers, the Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Internal Affairs Division are investigating the death. The Texas Commission on Jail Standards was also notified as required by state law, according to the sheriff’s office announcement reported by KVIA.
El Paso County’s 2025 annual report says that in-custody deaths are reviewed by those investigative units along with the Texas Commission on Jail Standards to assess the circumstances and any possible policy violations. The report also says the county’s two detention facilities recorded 10 in-custody deaths in 2025, including eight at the Downtown Detention Facility and two at the Jail Annex.
The Latest Death Follows Two Earlier 2026 Cases
The latest fatality follows a January death involving a federal inmate who had been housed at the downtown facility and a May death after an inmate suffered a medical emergency at the Jail Annex. Hoodline previously reported that the January inmate was taken to a hospital and later died.
In May, KVIA reported that the inmate was taken to an area hospital after lifesaving efforts at the annex. The sheriff’s office has not announced whether the current death involved a medical emergency, self-harm or another circumstance.
Officials Have Not Released The Inmate’s Identity
The sheriff’s office said the investigations are ongoing and that additional information will be released when it becomes available. For now, the case adds another unanswered death to the county’s 2026 custody tally.
