A leather goods brand that has outfitted travelers since 1975 has quietly opened an appointment-only boutique in River Oaks, and it is offering something the company has never sold in Houston before: fully custom clothing for men and women. Ghurka's new space at 3701 W. Alabama St., Suite 185, gives the Connecticut-born brand just its second brick-and-mortar outpost in the entire country, alongside a single location in New York City.

The shop, first reported by CultureMap Houston, pairs Ghurka's long-running leather bag and accessory business with a new custom clothing line that debuted as part of the brand's fall/winter 2026 collection. Glenn Pollack, Ghurka's chairman and CEO, told the outlet the decision to open in Houston came down to people and relationships, pointing to what he described as a meaningful history and longstanding ties the brand already has in the city. The boutique accepts appointments through Ghurka's website, where advisors work with clients on fabrics, silhouettes, proportions, and bespoke details for suits, shirting, and knitwear.

From Battlefield Duffels to Bespoke Suits

Ghurka's origin story is rooted in military history. Founder Marley Hodgson launched the brand in Connecticut after buying 100-year-old campaign travel gear and boots once carried by British Gurkha regimental officers in India at a UK antiquities auction, according to Ghurka. Hodgson replicated century-old tanning and construction techniques to build the brand's first products, including a revived vegetable-tanning formula originally engineered to make leather jungle-proof, rot-proof, and desert-proof for officers working in harsh climates. That leather is designed to develop a patina over decades of wear, per the same account.

The company's first commercial release, the Express No. 2 duffel bag, arrived in 1975 and remains a flagship item in Ghurka's lineup more than 50 years later. Ghurka had previously operated standalone boutiques on New York's Madison Avenue and Fifth Avenue before shifting toward appointment-focused spaces, a retreat from traditional storefronts that makes the River Oaks opening notable. Pollack told CultureMap that custom clothing at Ghurka is about the individual rather than a particular gender, with pieces focused on premium materials, durable construction, and designs centered on the person wearing them rather than passing trends.

A Bigger Business Bet Behind the Storefront

The apparel launch is not happening in isolation. Ghurka's custom clothing expansion operates in coordination with Knot Standard, a custom menswear platform that provides operational support and access to more than 160 retail placement locations, according to a release covered by the National Law Review. Knot Standard executives also oversee Ghurka's travel case brands, the release notes.

That travel case business grew significantly in May, when Ghurka acquired VinGardeValise and FlyWithWine, two leading brands specializing in hard-shell wine and spirits travel cases, through Ghurka affiliate LBH Wine Inc. Before that acquisition, luxury travel gear already made up more than half of Ghurka's total product mix, underscoring how much the custom clothing line is meant to diversify a business still driven primarily by bags, backpacks, wallets, belts, and accessories.

Why River Oaks, and Why Now

The boutique sits inside Timmons Place, a 50,320-square-foot multi-tenant commercial center built in 1970 near the boundary of Greenway/Upper Kirby and River Oaks, according to CommercialSearch. The complex is also home to high-end home showrooms, specialized medical offices, and personal service suites.

Ghurka's arrival adds to a wave of upscale retail investment in the area. Canadian retailer Aritzia is putting $9 million into a flagship remodel at The Galleria, Hoodline previously reported on Houston's retail surge, while wellness operator Club Studio opened a $5.5 million facility this month below the private Park House club at 4411 San Felipe St. Average household net worth within a one-mile radius of that River Oaks address ranges between $4 million and $5 million, a demographic profile that helps explain why brands like Ghurka are betting on the corridor over expanding into more cities nationwide.
