A 23-year-old man is facing a stack of charges after Hackensack police say he threatened a woman with a knife, assaulted her, and then fought and spit at officers who came to take him into custody. Segundo Pulizaruma was taken into custody Monday after officers responded to the 200 block of Beech Street, according to police.
According to a City of Hackensack redevelopment plan, one redevelopment area has Beech Street as its northern boundary and Railroad Avenue as its eastern boundary.
Hackensack Deputy Police Chief Gregory Zisa said Pulizaruma threatened the woman with a knife and assaulted her before officers arrived, as reported by Daily Voice. When officers moved to arrest him, Zisa said, Pulizaruma refused to cooperate and fought with police during the arrest.
The confrontation didn't end once he was in custody. Per Zisa's account, Pulizaruma continued fighting with officers during processing at police headquarters and spit at police officers during his arrest.
A Cascade of Felony Charges
Pulizaruma was charged with aggravated assault, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, simple assault, terroristic threats, resisting arrest, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was also charged with throwing bodily fluids at law enforcement officers and failing to submit to fingerprinting.
The charges include allegations involving assault, bodily fluids, and weapons, as well as other offenses.
The terroristic threats and weapons charges are among the allegations listed against Pulizaruma.
Booking Standoff Adds Another Charge
Even the booking process became contentious. Police also charged Pulizaruma with failing to submit to fingerprinting.
Hackensack police ultimately brought Pulizaruma under control and transported him to police headquarters before he was committed to the Bergen County Jail. The facility, located at 160 South River Street in Hackensack, serves as the county's central intake and pre-trial detention site, operating with more than 280 correction officers across roughly 1,150 beds, according to the Bergen County Sheriff's Office.
The allegations will be addressed as the case proceeds. It remains unclear what relationship, if any, existed between Pulizaruma and the woman he's accused of threatening, and whether a temporary restraining order has been sought.
Part of a Rough Stretch for Hackensack Police
The incident adds to a string of confrontational arrests Hackensack officers have handled in recent weeks. Just days earlier, police arrested 29-year-old Demond A.
