The midday gathering leads into neighborhood block parties later tonight, giving residents a chance to meet the people behind the badges, trucks, and sirens.
The free event runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Central Park, according to Maple Grove’s event calendar. The city says its police and fire departments are sponsoring lunch and an emergency equipment show before residents head back to their neighborhoods for the evening portion of National Night Out.
A helicopter, hot dogs, and a dunk tank
The Maple Grove Police Department’s Facebook announcement promises a distinctly hands-on lineup: attendees can tour a fire truck and squad car, meet local police officers and firefighters, and watch a helicopter arrive. The police chief will be grilling a free hot dog lunch with chips and drinks, while face painting, a balloon artist, and a dunk tank add some less-official public-safety training to the afternoon.
The event also includes crime-prevention information, community resources, and a school-supply drive supporting local students. Residents are encouraged to bring donations, making the kickoff more than a meet-and-greet with emergency personnel.
