A confrontation with a person carrying a handgun ended in gunfire east of Sweet Home Monday night, leaving the suspect injured and in custody while no officers were hurt. The shooting near River Bend County Park also shut down a key stretch of Highway 20 overnight, turning a crash-and-disturbance call into a multi-agency crime scene.
Oregon State Police troopers and Linn County sheriff’s deputies responded shortly before 7:30 p.m. Monday after a report of a crash and disturbance involving someone with a gun near the park, according to KATU. Authorities said officers encountered a person with a handgun, and shots were fired during the confrontation; the suspect was injured and taken into custody.
Highway 20 east of Sweet Home remained closed as investigators worked the scene, with the closure expected to last until about 8 a.m. Tuesday. State police said there was no ongoing threat to the public, and the Albany Police Department is leading the shooting investigation.
What Remains Unclear
The initial report from KATU did not identify the suspect, specify how many shots were fired, or explain what preceded the confrontation. Officials also have not said whether anyone else was injured or what charges the suspect could face.
A similar Linn County case near Scio in 2024 ended in a fatal SWAT shooting after an alleged pedestrian accident, and Oregon State Police investigated that incident, as reported by Hoodline. The circumstances of Monday night’s shooting are different, but both cases began with roadside calls that quickly escalated into armed confrontations involving multiple law enforcement agencies.

Authorities had not announced criminal charges against the suspect in the initial account. The arrest and the officer-involved shooting investigation are separate questions: prosecutors will determine whether charges are filed, while investigators work to establish what happened during the confrontation.
