Atlanta is starting Sunday clear and already warm, with temperatures around 80 degrees before sunrise. The bigger problem arrives by afternoon, when the city is expected to reach 96 degrees under mostly sunny skies.
Heat Advisory Runs Through Monday Evening
The National Weather Service has a Heat Advisory in effect through 8 p.m. Monday, warning that heat index values could reach 109 across parts of Georgia. Sunday’s forecast calls for a heat index near 102, while elevated overnight temperatures and humidity will offer little relief.
Sunday’s winds should stay light from the northwest at 0 to 5 mph, with only a 4% chance of rain. Monday looks even hotter, with a high near 98, a heat index as high as 105 and west winds gusting up to 20 mph.
Storm Chances Return Later In The Week
A few strong to severe storms could develop across far north Georgia Monday afternoon and evening, with damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph possible in the strongest storms. Atlanta’s immediate rain chances remain limited early in the week, but isolated afternoon storms remain possible around the region.
The pattern finally becomes less relentlessly hot by Friday, when the high is expected to reach 94 with a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Saturday should be slightly cooler near 91, but storm chances will continue.
Plan Around The Hottest Hours
The highest heat index values are expected from late morning through late afternoon. Drink plenty of fluids, use air conditioning when possible, wear lightweight clothing and move strenuous outdoor plans to early morning or evening.
