Eastbound Interstate 20 near Granbury Road in southwest Fort Worth was shut down this morning after a shooting sent a police public information officer racing to the scene, with authorities warning commuters to brace for long delays and steer clear of the area entirely.
According to a post from Fort Worth Police, a public information officer was en route to a shooting located off I-20 and Granbury Road, and the department advised the public to avoid the area if possible. Texas Department of Transportation traffic cameras showed vehicles being diverted off the freeway at Granbury Road as all eastbound lanes were closed for the active investigation, according to WFAA. Anyone with information was directed to call 911 or the department's non-emergency line at 817-392-4222 for less urgent matters, per the police post, which also noted its account is not monitored around the clock.
The interchange sits in a heavily trafficked stretch of southern Tarrant County, adjacent to the Hulen Mall commercial district and the suburb of Benbrook, and it functions as a primary east-west commuter route, according to FOX 4 News. Shutting down all eastbound lanes during the morning commute created cascading delays for drivers trying to connect from suburban areas into central Fort Worth, the station reported. It remains unclear whether the shooting stemmed from a road-rage incident or a more targeted confrontation between moving vehicles, and police have not said whether any victims or suspects have been located.
A Corridor With a History of Violent Incidents
This is not the first time the I-20 corridor in Fort Worth has been the site of gunfire on the roadway. Back in 2023, an off-duty Fort Worth officer witnessed a vehicle-to-vehicle shooting along eastbound I-20 that triggered a high-speed pursuit ending in a fatal collision at I-20 and Mansfield Highway, according to the Kennedale News. And in September 2016, a suspect shot two Fort Worth police officers during a domestic call near I-20 and Granbury Road before dying in a SWAT standoff; both officers survived after receiving medical treatment, per FOX 26 Houston.
The Granbury Road interchange has also seen deadly traffic incidents unrelated to gunfire. In December 2025, a multi-vehicle crash involving a pickup truck and an SUV near the same interchange killed two people and left one critically injured, as Hoodline previously reported. Major incidents at this stretch of freeway have routinely forced extensive lane closures and detours for commuters.
Crime Trends and Legal Stakes
Thursday's shooting comes even as citywide violent crime figures have trended downward. Midyear 2026 data from the Major Cities Chiefs Association showed Fort Worth recorded 28 homicides and 1,167 aggravated assaults, down from 39 homicides and 1,338 aggravated assaults during the same period in 2025. Still, incidents involving gunfire on a major freeway carry outsized public safety risk given the complexity of investigating a moving crime scene.
Under Texas Penal Code § 22.05, knowingly discharging a firearm at or in the direction of a vehicle or person is classified as deadly conduct, a third-degree felony punishable by two to 10 years in prison and fines up to $10,000, according to Justia Law. It is not yet known whether any suspect has been identified or charged in connection with Thursday's shooting.
A Growing City Straining Its Freeways
Fort Worth surpassed 1 million residents in 2024 after adding more than 100,000 people since 2020, making it one of the fastest-growing large cities in the country and placing added strain on major freeway corridors like I-20, according to data from Omnilert. The Fort Worth Police Department was operating with roughly 1,700 sworn officers against an authorized force of about 1,900, covering more than 350 square miles of city land as of 2024, the same data shows.
In March, the city launched ReadyFW, a new multi-channel emergency alerting platform designed to broadcast real-time text, call, and email warnings during public safety incidents and traffic emergencies. It's the kind of system now being tested by incidents like Thursday's shutdown, as officials and commuters alike wait for word on when eastbound lanes near Granbury Road will reopen.
