Naija Wife Kitchen, the Afro-fusion restaurant that turned downtown Oklahoma City diners onto Nigerian cuisine and earned its owner a James Beard Foundation semifinalist nod, will close its doors on September 25 after three years in business. Owner and chef Tahnee Francis announced the closure on the restaurant's social media page in August, citing circumstances beyond her control.
Francis broke the news directly to her customers in a farewell message posted to Facebook, thanking patrons for supporting her business growth over the past three years. As reported by The Oklahoman, the closure ends a run for one of downtown's more distinctive dining destinations, located in the food court of the historic 12-story Robinson Renaissance building at 119 N. Robinson Ave. The restaurant had previously operated out of a storefront on Hudson Avenue after Francis first opened her brick-and-mortar location there in late 2021.
From a Sold-Out Pop-Up to a National Stage
Francis's culinary path started well before she signed a lease. In October 2020, she tested her concept with a pop-up at Nappy Roots bookstore, and her food sold out completely within two hours, according to a profile that appeared on Influential Women's website. That early response convinced her there was appetite for Nigerian cooking in a market where, at the time Naija Wife Kitchen launched, only one other Nigerian restaurant existed in the entire state of Oklahoma.
The restaurant distinguished itself further by tailoring its menu specifically to introduce West African flavors to non-Nigerian diners, a mission Francis pursued by personally greeting guests and offering free samples to ease first-timers into unfamiliar dishes, per a report from Oklahoma Magazine. That approach helped turn a niche cuisine into a downtown destination even as it kept a fully gluten-free menu of staples like egusi soup, pounded yam fufu and Banga soup, alongside her signature Spicy Suya Wings, which blended American Southern fried chicken with West African suya spices, according to Edible OKC.
James Beard Recognition Capped a Remarkable Run
Francis, who is self-taught and learned traditional Nigerian recipes from her husband and extended family before developing her own fusion dishes, was named a 2025 James Beard Foundation semifinalist for Best Chef: Southwest. She was nominated alongside other prominent Oklahoma City chefs, including Kevin Lee of Birdies and Zack Walters of Sedalia's, part of what a newsletter called Lost in Translation described as a record surge of seven James Beard semifinalist nominations for Oklahoma City chefs across 2025 and 2026 — a wave Hoodline has also chronicled in its own coverage of the local James Beard finalists.
During its three-year run, Naija Wife Kitchen served as a regular caterer for the University of Oklahoma football team, and Francis was invited to cook at the 2026 James Beard Foundation Awards ceremony in Chicago, milestones she highlighted in her farewell message to customers and supporters.
A Downtown Corridor in Transition
Naija Wife Kitchen's building along Robinson Avenue sits within a downtown transit corridor that Oklahoma City planners have targeted for a new multi-modal cultural spine intended to connect Bricktown, Scissortail Park and downtown office towers. Hoodline has previously reported that the city's updated downtown master plan aims to increase urban residential housing and street-level retail along that same stretch of Robinson Avenue, part of a broader push to quadruple downtown housing by 2060.
Beyond the kitchen, Francis has built a public profile as a pageant titleholder, having been crowned Mrs. Black International Ambassador Oklahoma 2022 and Ms. Black Oklahoma USA 2025. She has used that platform to advocate for individuals with disabilities and for chronic illness awareness following her own recovery from three major spinal surgeries, according to the Influential Women profile.
No word yet on what comes next for Francis after Naija Wife Kitchen serves its final meals on September 25, but her farewell message made clear the closure was not for lack of support from the downtown community that embraced her restaurant for three years.
