K-Pop Minnecon is coming back to St. Paul next week, and this time organizers aren't messing around with a single day. The convention, which drew more than 2,000 fans in its first year, has expanded into a full two-day festival running Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 29-30, at the Saint Paul RiverCentre, with South Korean girl group ICHILLIN' set to headline the closing night.

The event's growth is dramatic when you consider where it started. As reported by 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS, K-Pop Minnecon is returning to St. Paul for its second year as a two-day event centered on music, fashion, and community, complete with vendors selling K-pop merchandise and a dance workshop. That inaugural gathering took place in September 2025 at the DoubleTree Hilton MSP in Bloomington near the Mall of America, where roughly 75 local vendors, photocard trading tables, and a K-pop concert filled out a single-day schedule, according to Y105FM.

From Hotel Ballroom to RiverCentre Halls

The jump to a two-day festival at RiverCentre puts Minnecon inside one of the region's larger event spaces. The downtown St. Paul venue offers more than 250,000 square feet of total event space, including over 68,000 square feet of continuous exhibition space across its lower-level halls, and connects to the 5,500-seat Roy Wilkins Auditorium and the city's skyway system, per details from the Saint Paul RiverCentre.

Minnecon is organized by MNKpopConnect, a Minnesota fan group founded by Toby Vang that has built its following through regional dance challenges, networking events, and seasonal cultural festivals across the Twin Cities. This year's schedule, per the group, features a Midwest K-pop team dance competition on Saturday, followed by a solo dance competition, community panels, and the headlining concert on Sunday — the same day 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS notes the dance competition will showcase Midwest crews alongside the convention's other music and fashion programming.

ICHILLIN' Brings Rising Chart Credentials

Sunday's headliner, ICHILLIN', is a seven-member group under KM Entertainment made up of E.Ji, Jiyoon, Jackie, Joonie, Chaerin, Yeju, and Chowon. The group debuted in September 2021 with the digital single “Got'Ya,” and its name blends “Aisling,” meaning dream or vision, with “Chillin',” according to background compiled by AllMusic.

Since then, the group has climbed steadily on South Korea's Circle Album Chart, with EPs including “I'm On It!” reaching No. 22 in July 2023, “Feelin' Hot” hitting No. 26 in March 2024, and “Wild Cherry” landing at No. 25 in July 2025 — a trajectory AllMusic attributes in part to the group's appearances on Korean television music competitions.

A Year-Round Fan Ecosystem Feeds the Convention

Minnecon doesn't exist in isolation. MNKpopConnect used the RiverCentre earlier this year to host Bangtan Bash in March, a free BTS-themed fan festival with dance competitions and photocard trading that served as part of a recurring seasonal festival series meant to keep fans engaged between conventions, according to the venue's own announcement.

That grassroots dance culture also has campus roots. The University of Minnesota's K-Move dance crew brings students and community members together for regular K-pop rehearsals and performances, feeding local talent into Midwest cover competitions, reports the Minnesota Daily. Formal dance instruction has followed suit, too — Cypher Side gave K-pop a rotunda stage at the Mall of America, where the North St. Paul studio now teaches K-pop dance disciplines alongside breaking and hip-hop to more than 300 students.

Retail has grown alongside the fandom as well. KPOP NARA, the Mall of America shop, partners on public random dance challenges and promotional events across the metro, a sign of the commercial infrastructure now surrounding Twin Cities K-pop culture, according to Bloomington Minnesota Travel & Tourism. Combined with the RiverCentre's expanded footprint and ICHILLIN's rising international profile, Minnecon's second year looks set to test just how large the region's K-pop audience has become.
