Kingwood Lands Supersized AutoZone Hub, Construction Set for January

A new AutoZone is headed for 1378 Northpark Drive in Kingwood, and state filings show it will be far bigger than the auto parts chain's typical storefront. Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation records place the facility at roughly 25,500 square feet, with construction projected to begin in January 2027 and wrap up by August of that year.

The project filing, submitted to the state on July 31, 2026, lists an estimated construction budget of $2,579,366, according to Community Impact. The filing sets a target start date of January 17, 2027, with completion expected by August 6, 2027. State registration records tied to the filing list Lennar Homes of Texas Land and Construction LTD as the land owner for the parcel, with Belmont, North Carolina-based Helt Design serving as the project's architectural firm.

A Store More Than Triple the Usual Size

A typical AutoZone location runs between 6,500 and 8,000 square feet, meaning the planned Kingwood building will be more than three times the size of the chain's standard retail footprint, per the Jax Daily Record. That scale lines up with AutoZone's corporate push into what the company calls Mega Hub locations — buildings in the 25,000-to-35,000-square-foot range designed to stock more than 100,000 unique parts and rapidly resupply nearby satellite stores and commercial repair shops. Corporate financial reports cited by the same publication indicate AutoZone operated 119 Mega Hubs by mid-2025 and has plans to build up to 300 nationwide.

The dossier does not indicate whether AutoZone has officially confirmed the Kingwood site as a Mega Hub rather than a standard large-format store, so that designation remains based on the facility's size matching the company's known hub specifications rather than a company statement. AutoZone, founded in 1979 in Arkansas and now headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee, has grown into the largest automotive replacement parts retailer in the country, with more than 7,100 stores across the United States, Mexico and Brazil, according to WhatNow.

Kingwood's First AutoZone, But Not Its First Auto Parts Store

The new site will mark AutoZone's first location directly inside Kingwood proper. The company currently operates nearby stores in Humble and Porter, while competitor Advance Auto Parts already runs an operational store along Northpark Drive in Kingwood, WhatNow reported in August 2026. Rising demand for parts and repairs is also playing out at a broader scale: commercial real estate research from early 2026 found the average age of light vehicles on U.S. roads hit a record 12.8 years in 2025, a trend that has pushed parts retailers to expand their distribution footprints.

Building Alongside a Major Road Widening

The AutoZone site sits inside a corridor undergoing a $76.8 million infrastructure overhaul led by the Lake Houston Redevelopment Authority, which is widening Northpark Drive from four to six divided lanes and building an overpass over Loop 494 and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. Phase 1 of that overpass construction broke ground in 2023, with completion targeted for late 2026. The road project also includes linear stormwater detention basin construction along the Kingwood Diversion Ditch, intended to improve local flood mitigation and protect regional evacuation routes, according to Reduce Flooding.

The timing places AutoZone's construction start just months after the overpass work is expected to conclude, positioning the new hub to open onto an upgraded thoroughfare. It's part of a wider commercial buildout along the corridor: Kingwood also landed a new Chipotle along Northpark Drive near Highway 59, a 3,160-square-foot buildout with an estimated $1.2 million budget that Hoodline reported on in January 2026.

Open questions remain about the Kingwood project, including whether AutoZone will formally confirm the site's role as a regional hub, how traffic will be managed near the site amid ongoing road construction, and when Harris or Montgomery County officials will issue the final local building permits ahead of the planned January 2027 start.
