LaGrange Man Found Hiding in Attic After 8-Hour SWAT Standoff

A LaGrange man spent nearly eight hours barricaded inside a home on West Moody Lane before officers found him hiding in the attic, ending a standoff that drew a multi-agency SWAT response and left no one injured. Dillian Malik Barber was taken into custody after Oldham County deputies arrived at the home shortly after 8 p.m. Friday to serve an outstanding warrant.

Deputies went to the home to serve a warrant stemming from a probation violation, according to WDRB. Barber also had outstanding warrants for violating a Kentucky emergency protective order and for fleeing or evading police, per the same report. When officers arrived, Barber reportedly saw them and barricaded himself inside the residence rather than surrender.

What followed was hours of failed attempts to talk him out. Officers tried to communicate with Barber throughout the standoff, but he refused to come out, and the situation escalated into a full tactical response involving Oldham County police SWAT teams, a drone, chemical agents and flashbangs, police said. Officers eventually entered the home and found Barber hiding in the attic, according to police, and he was taken into custody with no other reported injuries from the incident.

Regional Mutual Aid Brought in Armor, K-9 Support

The scale of the response reflected how heavily Oldham County leaned on neighboring agencies. St. Matthews Police brought an armored vehicle to the scene, while the Louisville Metro Police Department provided a K-9 unit to assist Oldham County officers during the standoff, the station's report notes. The assistance showed that neighboring agencies contributed specialized equipment and personnel to the response.

LaGrange, a home-rule city of roughly 10,000 people that serves as the Oldham County seat, sits in Oldham County, per Wikipedia. The standoff in the county seat drew armored equipment and canine support from other departments.

Prior Strangulation Case in Criminal History

Barber's criminal history in Oldham County appears to have factored into the tactical caution officers exercised during the warrant execution. According to the Kentucky Department of Corrections Offender Online Lookup System, Barber's criminal history includes a second-degree strangulation case in Oldham County under KRS 508.175. That statute, according to Justia Law, classifies second-degree strangulation as a Class D felony carrying a potential sentence of one to five years in state prison.

The warrant deputies were attempting to serve was also related to an alleged violation of a Kentucky emergency protective order.

Fleeing Warrant Was Among Barber's Outstanding Warrants

Barber's outstanding warrant for fleeing or evading police was among the warrants deputies were attempting to serve. Following the standoff, Barber was also charged with resisting arrest.
