The preliminary account points to a dispute between the two individuals, but police have not said what sparked it or whether they knew each other. As of the initial report, authorities had not announced charges, disclosed a motive or provided additional details about the weapon.
Liberty Park Is A Major Salt Lake City Gathering Spot
Liberty Park is Salt Lake City's oldest and second-largest park, with playgrounds, sports courts, walking loops and the Tracy Aviary, according to the city's Public Lands Department. The shooting happened in a prominent community space where police activity would have been highly visible to people nearby.
The Park Has Seen Previous Gunfire
Liberty Park has also been the scene of previous shootings. KSL.com reported in 2021 that one shooting injured a man in the leg and that a second incident less than two weeks later involved gunfire toward a group, although no one was hurt in that later case.
