A man is dead after Memphis Police responded to a wounding call at a Cordova apartment complex Wednesday afternoon, and officers detained another man at the scene as investigators try to piece together what happened. No charges have been filed as of the latest update on the case.
Officers were dispatched around 3:10 p.m. Wednesday to the 7900 block of Autumn Hollow Drive, where they found the man dead, according to WMC Action News 5. As WATN-TV reported, the call was initially classified as a wounding before officers arrived and located the victim. Police have not publicly identified either the man who died or the man who was detained, and the precise cause or weapon involved in the incident has not been released.
The address falls within the 7800 and 7900 blocks of Autumn Hollow Drive, an area that encompasses Trinity Lakes Apartments, a multi-building residential complex off Trinity Road, per the same television station's earlier reporting. A Block With a History of Violent Calls
This is not the first time law enforcement has responded to violence on this stretch of Autumn Hollow Drive. In November 2016, police arrested three suspects, including a 13-year-old, after an armed robbery of a Papa John's delivery driver in the 7800 block, according to WATN-TV's coverage from that year. The driver was robbed of $20 at gunpoint before officers and Shelby County deputies caught the fleeing suspects nearby.
More recently, in April 2025, Memphis Police responded to reports of gunfire near Trinity Lakes Apartments at 7850 Autumn Hollow Drive during overnight disturbance calls, according to Town of Cordova safety records. Wednesday's death also comes just two days after another violent incident in the neighborhood: on Monday, a woman was shot in the leg outside a home on Pinkerton Lane, leading Shelby County Sheriff's deputies to detain a male suspect in that case.
Homicides Down Citywide, But Cordova Sees a Cluster
Cordova falls under the Memphis Police Department's Appling Farms Station, or Precinct 8, located at 6850 Appling Farms Parkway, which underwent boundary redistricting in July 2025. The precinct's coverage area has now seen multiple violent incidents within days of each other, even as the department reports broader progress against violent crime.
During the second quarter of 2026, MPD reported a 60% citywide decrease in murders compared to the same period in 2025, along with an 81% clearance rate by its Homicide Bureau. Memphis recorded 184 intentional homicides in 2025, a 26% decrease from 250 in 2024 and the first time the city's annual murder total fell below 200 since 2019, according to the department's own reporting. MPD has attributed the drop to its “Sustain the Gains” strategy focused on people, places, prosecution, and prevention.
What Comes Next for the Detained Man
It remains unclear what relationship, if any, existed between the detained man and the victim, and police have not announced formal charges. Under Tennessee law, first-degree murder carries a sentence of death or life imprisonment, while second-degree murder is a Class A felony punishable by 15 to 60 years in prison, per Tennessee Code Annotated § 39-13-202 and § 39-13-210. Any charging decision would ultimately rest with the Shelby County District Attorney's Office based on evidence gathered by MPD Homicide Bureau investigators.
This marks at least the third violent incident Hoodline has covered in Cordova this summer, following a fatal shooting at a Cordova apartment complex in early June and a pre-dawn shooting at another Cordova complex in late July.
