An adult man was shot on the 2700 block of R Street SE in Southeast D.C. early Sunday morning, sending him to a nearby hospital as police worked to figure out what led to the gunfire. Responding officers found the man with a gunshot wound around 2:08 a.m. and reported that he was conscious and breathing when medics arrived on scene.
The Metropolitan Police Department said officers who responded to the 2700 block of R Street SE discovered the man wounded and had him transported for treatment, according to WJLA. As of the outlet's report, his condition had not been disclosed. Investigators are still trying to determine what led to the shooting and are working to identify the person responsible.
Second Shooting on the Block Within a Week
Sunday's shooting came just a week after another shooting near an apartment building on the same street, on August 2, where a man was shot and spent shell casings were recovered at the scene. That earlier incident, relayed in local reporting on Facebook, prompted ANC Commissioner Andrea Davis and community leaders to call for increased police presence and camera surveillance along the corridor.
The 2700 block of R Street SE falls under the jurisdiction of MPD's Sixth District, which patrols residential and commercial areas across Ward 7 in Southeast D.C. Gun violence has flared along this same corridor before: historical police records document a July 2023 armed carjacking at gunpoint in the 2300 block of R Street SE and an August 2022 armed robbery shooting in the 1700 block, both investigated by Sixth District detectives, according to Congress Heights on the Rise.
City Leaders Have Already Walked This Street
Concerns about safety on R Street SE are not new to city officials. In January, Mayor Muriel Bowser and Commissioner Davis walked Minnesota Avenue and ended near the 1700 block of R Street SE specifically to hear resident complaints about drug activity and street safety, per the Washington Informer. Residents have continued pressing District officials for targeted safety investments in the months since.
The renewed gunfire on R Street SE arrives even as citywide numbers point in the opposite direction. Violent crime across Washington, D.C. fell 26 percent in 2026 compared to the prior year, building on a 35 percent drop recorded in 2024, according to the Center for American Progress. That broader decline followed the D.C. Council's 2024 passage of the Secure DC Omnibus Amendment Act, which expanded pre-trial detention for armed violent crimes and mandated monthly public crime data reporting. Under that law, the D.C. Criminal Justice Coordinating Council now publishes monthly reports tracking violent crime, homicides, and arrests broken down by ward and police service area.

MPD is asking anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. Tips can be called into the department's Command Information Center at 202-727-9099 or texted anonymously to the department's tip line at 50411, which accepts text messages, photos, and video around the clock. MPD also offers a reward of up to $10,000 for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in non-fatal shooting cases.
Sunday's shooting is the latest in a string of gun violence incidents Hoodline has tracked across Southeast D.C. in recent months, including shootings on nearby Langston Place, Robinson Place, and Shipley Terrace. No arrests have been announced in connection with the R Street SE shooting, and the investigation remains open.
