A man was shot inside a business near 39th and Main streets late Friday night in Kansas City, and he later died at a nearby hospital as police continued searching for a person of interest who ran from the scene before officers arrived. No arrests have been made, and detectives are still working to determine what led to the shooting.
Emergency crews responded to the area around 11:45 p.m. Friday, according to the Kansas City Police Department, as reported by KCTV. Officers found the victim inside a nearby business, unresponsive and suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, per the station's report. First responders performed life-saving measures at the scene before he was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police said a person of interest ran from the business before officers arrived, and investigators are still searching for that individual. The case is being investigated as a homicide, and the same account notes that detectives responded to the scene to collect evidence and interview witnesses. Police said the investigation remains ongoing, and no arrests have been announced.
A Corridor Caught Between Nightlife and New Development
The intersection of 39th and Main sits in a stretch of Midtown that has drawn significant investment in recent years. The KC Streetcar Main Street Extension is approximately 3.5 miles and costs about $350 million, running from Union Station toward 51st Street and Brookside Boulevard, with the University of Missouri–Kansas City identified as a future stop, according to CitySceneKC.
The area borders Westport, one of Kansas City's best-known entertainment districts, where the city took the unusual step in December 2017 of relinquishing sidewalk ownership along main corridors so private security could run weapons checkpoints and metal detectors between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. on weekend nights, according to the Washington Times. Westport has also drawn attention to security concerns. Homicides Down Citywide, But Violence Persists
Friday's shooting comes as Kansas City's overall homicide numbers have been trending downward. KCPD statistics reported by KCUR showed homicides in the city dropped 20% year-to-date as of mid-July, with 71 recorded compared to 89 during the same period in 2025. Nonfatal shootings also fell, with 183 recorded as of July 12 compared to 217 a year earlier, per the same source.
That decline follows a broader multi-year trend. Kansas City recorded 138 homicides in 2025, a 5% drop from 145 in 2024 and the city's lowest annual total since 2018, according to Dos Mundos. Once cases reach court, Jackson County prosecutors have posted strong results, too — the Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney's Office achieved a 91% conviction rate in homicide cases in 2024, resolving 68 of 80 closed cases.
