A man was shot multiple times and killed near the intersection of Broadway and Lewis Avenue on Wednesday night, in an area straddling the border between Bushwick and Bedford-Stuyvesant. Police say the shooter remains at large, and the investigation is ongoing.
NYPD officers responded to a shooting call at the intersection at approximately 9:16 p.m., according to Live Map. Officers found an unidentified man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds throughout his body, as reported by News 12 New York. Emergency medical personnel rushed the victim to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The victim was taken to Kings County Hospital, per the same footage reviewed by Live Map. NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County operates one of only three Level 1 Trauma Centers in Brooklyn, handling more than 1,200 trauma activations annually across central and eastern parts of the borough, according to information from NYC Health + Hospitals.
An Investigation Still Taking Shape
Police have not released a description of the suspect wanted in connection with the shooting, and detectives said the investigation is still ongoing, per News 12 New York's reporting. The identity of the victim has not been made public. Key details, including whether surveillance footage from the elevated subway station or nearby storefronts captured the shooter's escape, remain unknown.
Broadway forms the official dividing line between Bushwick to the northeast and Bedford-Stuyvesant to the southwest, and the elevated train line running along the street physically bisects the two neighborhoods, according to Wikipedia. That geography places Wednesday's shooting squarely on the boundary between the 83rd and 81st precincts, though the incident falls within the jurisdiction of the 81st Precinct.
A Corridor With a Troubled Summer
The killing adds to a string of violent incidents along the same commercial strip this summer. NYPD CompStat data through late July showed murder complaints in the 81st Precinct were up 13.6% year-to-date compared to the same period in 2025, with 67 complaints recorded so far this year versus 59 last year, according to NYPD CompStat. Major index crime in the neighboring 83rd Precinct, which covers Bushwick, rose 31.6% in 2026 compared to the prior year, the largest percentage increase of any precinct citywide, per data cited by Vital City.
A Citywide Trend That Doesn't Match the Block
The local spike stands in sharp contrast to citywide numbers. NYPD data released in July showed New York City recorded 322 shooting incidents and 122 murders through the first six months of 2026, the lowest first-half totals for both categories in recorded city history, with major crime down 5.8% overall citywide, according to FOX 5 New York.
If police identify and arrest a suspect, the case could bring a charge of second-degree murder under New York Penal Law § 125.25, a Class A-I felony that carries a mandatory indeterminate sentence of 15 years to life in state prison for intentionally causing another person's death, per legal guidance published by Federal Lawyers. No suspect description has been released, and no arrests have been announced as the investigation continues.
