Atlanta police say a man was shot in the buttocks during an early-morning argument with an acquaintance in the 800 block of Magnolia Way NW, in the city's English Avenue neighborhood. The shooting happened around 2:11 a.m. Wednesday, and the victim was alert, conscious and breathing when officers arrived, according to police. Emergency responders took him to an area hospital for treatment. Witnesses told responding officers that the shooter fled the scene on an e-bike.
The motive behind the dispute remains unclear, and police have not disclosed the victim's condition after he reached the hospital, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. Atlanta police pinpointed the scene as 814 Magnolia Way NW, logging the case as an aggravated assault under incident report number 262170185, according to the Atlanta Police Department. Investigators are still working to identify the shooter, and no suspect description has been released.
Magnolia Park's Troubled History of Violence
The shooting took place at Magnolia Park I, a multi-family subsidized housing complex with 87 units overseen by the Housing Authority of the City of Atlanta, according to federal records reviewed by ProPublica. The complex sits on a stretch of Magnolia Way NW that has seen repeated gunfire over the past five years.
In August 2021, 28-year-old Jonathan Pennington was critically shot inside a vehicle on the same block and later died at a hospital — a killing that marked Atlanta's 100th homicide of that year, per FOX 5 Atlanta. Police later arrested a juvenile suspect on murder and armed robbery charges. Three months earlier, 28-year-old Alice Merrell was shot multiple times and killed inside an apartment complex on the same block, according to Patch.
More Recent Shootings Along the Block
The violence has continued closer to the present. Across the street at 803 Magnolia Way NW, a 26-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to his arm in November 2024. He self-transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, and APD's Aggravated Assault Unit handled the investigation, as Hoodline reported in a previous Magnolia Way shooting.
Atlanta police also investigated a homicide on the same block in September 2023, after a man was shot to death on a Saturday morning. Officers arrested a suspect shortly afterward, FOX 5 Atlanta reported at the time.
A Citywide Spike in Aggravated Assaults
The Wednesday shooting also lands amid a broader trend across Atlanta. Mid-year 2026 data from the Atlanta Police Department showed that while overall crime in the city declined, aggravated assaults rose 22% compared with the same period the previous year, according to Atlanta News First. The outlet noted the figures were released ahead of major international events hosted in the city.
That pattern tracks with longer-term trends. Robbery rates in Atlanta have steadily fallen since 2015, but aggravated assaults surged during the COVID-19 pandemic and have remained elevated relative to other violent and property crime categories, according to an analysis by 33n. Overall violent crime in Atlanta still dropped 58% between 2009 and 2025, the analysis found.
The Wednesday shooting arrived during a busy overnight shift for Atlanta officers. Police also logged an aggravated assault on Stratford Road NE and responded to a barricaded male incident on Sims Street SW during the same early-morning hours, according to the Atlanta Police Department. All three incidents required emergency responses before 8 a.m.
Potential Charges if a Suspect Is Identified
No arrests have been announced. If a suspect is eventually identified and charged, Georgia law classifies aggravated assault with a deadly weapon as a felony punishable by one to 20 years in prison under Official Code of Georgia Annotated § 16-5-21, according to Ross & Pines, LLC. Discharging a firearm toward another person meets that statutory definition regardless of whether it strikes its target, the firm notes.
