A man was shot Wednesday night in Fall River's historic Corky Row neighborhood, sending police swarming to the area of Fourth and Morgan Streets and prompting an investigation that spans three separate units within the police department. Officers responded to a call around 9 p.m. reporting a shooting victim, and located an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound, according to the Fall River Police Department.
The victim was transported to St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford for treatment, per an official statement shared by the City of Fall River Police Department on Facebook. St. Luke's is the first and only Level II Adult Trauma Center in Massachusetts EMS Region 5, a designation from the state Department of Public Health that provides 24/7 emergency surgical trauma care for southeastern Massachusetts, according to Southcoast Health. Before the hospital earned that status, severely injured patients from the region often had to be transported as far as Boston or Providence.
Fall River Police Deputy Chief Barden Castro confirmed that the shooting occurred specifically on the 300 block of Fourth Street, within the Corky Row neighborhood, according to the Fall River Reporter. The department's Major Crimes Division, Patrol Bureau, and Community Action and Suppression Team, known as CAST, are all working the case together, per the police statement. Police say no additional details were available for release at the time, and the investigation remains in its early stages, with information still developing.
A Specialized Anti-Violence Unit Joins the Case
CAST's involvement points to how seriously the department is treating the shooting. The unit was established in late 2024 as a specialized proactive patrol team tasked with executing search warrants and curbing illegal firearms and drug distribution, the Fall River Reporter's report on the unit's creation notes. It frequently collaborates with the department's Major Crimes Division and Emergency Services Unit on high-priority violence cases.
The team has stayed active in recent weeks. In July, CAST detectives executed multiple search warrants across Fall River that turned up more than a kilogram of cocaine, a loaded 9mm pistol, methamphetamine, and a Remington rifle, according to a Facebook post from the police department. That enforcement push came directly before this week's shooting, underscoring the unit's ongoing focus on firearms recovered from the streets it patrols.
A Corner With a Violent History
The intersection of Fourth and Morgan Streets carries its own troubled record. It was the site of a September 2019 gang-related shooting that eventually led to a major murder and illegal firearm trial in Fall River Superior Court in May 2025, the Fall River Reporter reported at the time, noting that case involved high-capacity illegal firearms and multiple co-defendants. The same stretch of Fourth Street was also the scene of a stranger public safety incident in August 2022, when a Fall River firefighter was struck and injured by a BB gun pellet while officers were investigating an unrelated shooting nearby — an incident that Deputy Chief Castro also handled communications for.
Corky Row itself is one of Fall River's oldest and most densely built neighborhoods. Developed between 1840 and 1870 as a high-density district of multi-family textile mill tenements largely settled by Irish immigrants, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 and today contains more than 400 historic structures, including apartment buildings and former mills, per Wikipedia.
