A man in his 30s is recovering in stable condition after being shot outside a luxury high-rise on the Greenpoint waterfront early Monday morning, according to the NYPD. The shooting happened around 1:15 a.m. near 77 Commercial Street, the address of Tower 77, and left the victim with gunshot wounds to the chest and right arm, police say.
Police say the man was initially rushed to a local hospital in critical condition before his status was later upgraded to stable, according to PIX11. The investigation remains active, and no arrests have been announced. The shooting unfolded right outside one of Greenpoint's most prominent residential developments — Tower 77, a two-tower luxury complex with buildings reaching 30 and 40 stories and more than 700 apartment units, according to New York YIMBY. The complex sits along the waterfront near Newtown Creek and the East River.

Tower 77 is no ordinary apartment building. The site also sits directly next to the planned Box Street Park at 65 Commercial Street, a public waterfront space created through an air-rights agreement struck during the tower's approval process.

The shooting falls under the jurisdiction of the NYPD's 94th Precinct, which operates out of a station house at 100 Meserole Avenue and covers Greenpoint and parts of northern Williamsburg. Gun violence of this kind is unusual for the area — shooting incidents in the 94th Precinct dropped 87.5% in 2023, falling to just one recorded shooting that year from eight the year before, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office. That decline mirrored a broader 25% drop in shootings across Brooklyn that same year.

Monday's shooting followed a string of violent incidents elsewhere in the borough in recent days, including a fatal shooting on Crescent Street in East New York on August 21 and a double shooting on Rockaway Avenue on August 23, according to Fox 5 New York. Neither of those earlier incidents resulted in immediate arrests. It remains unknown whether the victim in Greenpoint or any potential suspect had ties to Tower 77 as a resident or visitor, and police have not said whether surveillance footage from the complex is being reviewed as part of the investigation.
