A man was shot in the head late Sunday night during a shootout with another man outside a large party in Downtown Los Angeles, near the northern edge of the Fashion District’s Santee Alley shopping corridor. The gunfire broke out around 11:06 p.m. at East Olympic Boulevard and Santee Street, and the wounded man was rushed to a hospital by ambulance with what were described as stable vital signs.
According to mynewsla.com, an LAPD spokesman reported that the shooting happened at that intersection, which sits at the northern gateway to Santee Alley, the open-air retail strip that anchors part of the sprawling 107-block Los Angeles Fashion District. A news videographer on scene said the two men were shooting at each other, and that the gunfire erupted outside a large party taking place downtown.
Investigators say the suspect fired from the north side of Olympic Boulevard, while the victim was located on the south side of the street. After the exchange of gunfire, the suspect fled on foot, and his identity has not been released. It remains unclear whether the party that preceded the shootout was permitted, who organized it, or what sparked the confrontation between the two men.
A Corridor With a History of Trouble
The stretch of Santee Street near Olympic Boulevard has seen its share of unrest in recent months. The site was also the scene of a brazen daylight theft in June 2025, when thieves used a white SUV to rip an ATM off the sidewalk in front of a nearby shop, according to the report cited in local case histories from that period.
Just five months before Sunday’s shootout, a bicyclist opened fire on a vehicle passenger further south along Santee Street at Washington Boulevard, critically wounding the victim before pedaling away, as Hoodline previously reported. And in June, a street vendor was attacked near her stand on the 1100 block of Santee Street during an argument caught on video by bystanders, an incident that involved a thrown trash cart and drew a local police response, per FOX 11 Los Angeles.

The Fashion District spans 107 city blocks and houses more than 5,000 independent apparel, textile, and wholesale businesses, according to Plucky Reach, creating a mixed commercial landscape where late-night gatherings can spring up alongside shuttered storefronts once the workday ends. In Downtown LA more broadly, private security firms often coordinate with police to monitor commercial properties and event spaces, per the Safety Host Unit, as rapid residential growth has expanded the footprint of private patrols across the area’s historic industrial corridors.
The intersection falls within LAPD’s Central Division, based out of the station on East 6th Street, where roughly 400 sworn and civilian staff cover 4.5 square miles across 14 Downtown neighborhoods including the Fashion District, Skid Row, and South Park. In March, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass authorized up to 10 additional LAPD foot-beat officers to patrol Downtown streets in response to rising concerns over street gatherings and public violence, a deployment aimed at high-traffic commercial and residential zones across the division’s footprint.
Open Questions and Potential Charges
No arrest had been announced as of Sunday night’s report, and investigators have not said whether ballistic evidence has been recovered on either side of Olympic Boulevard or whether surveillance footage from nearby retail storefronts has been secured. If the fleeing suspect is eventually caught, prosecutors would need to weigh the severity of the injury and any prior criminal history in deciding how to charge him.
Under California Penal Code Section 245(a)(2), assault with a firearm is what’s known as a wobbler offense, carrying a potential state prison sentence of two, three, or four years for a felony conviction, with the possibility of additional firearm enhancements.
