Margaritaville Hotel San Diego Gaslamp Quarter is turning its rooftop pool deck into a free, all-ages celebration this Friday, September 4, complete with tropical cocktails, live music and a benefit concert headlined by the Buffett Beach Band. The 5 pm event costs nothing to attend, and proceeds from food and beverage sales that night will benefit the San Diego Music Foundation, the nonprofit that keeps instruments in the hands of local public school kids.
The party unfolds at the hotel's 5 o'Clock Somewhere Bar, 435 Sixth Avenue, and continues all weekend long with pop-up experiences, island-inspired activities and interactive experiences inspired by Jimmy Buffett's laid-back lifestyle, according to KPBS. A travel-themed silent auction will also run through the weekend, with those proceeds again supporting the San Diego Music Foundation.
How the Rooftop Party Funds Music Classrooms
The nonprofit at the center of the fundraiser has spent more than three decades placing instruments in San Diego classrooms. Founded in 1991, the San Diego Music Foundation partnered with El Cajon-based Taylor Guitars to launch its Guitars for Schools program, weaving instrument training directly into public K-12 curricula, according to the San Diego Music Awards.
That partnership recently hit a major milestone: the foundation has now raised more than $1 million and distributed over 2,000 guitars to 131 public schools across San Diego County, per CBS 8 San Diego. The station's report notes the donations help offset steep cuts to arts funding in local schools.
A Global Brand's Local Tribute
The San Diego stop is one piece of a much larger corporate effort. Margaritaville formalized its brand-wide Jimmy Buffett Day of Service in 2024, the year after the singer's death in September 2023, designating the Friday of Labor Day Weekend for community service and charitable giving across its hotels, resorts and cruise ships worldwide, according to Margaritaville.
During these annual activations, participating properties donate half of food and beverage proceeds from designated venue events directly to local nonprofit partners, per PR Newswire. The framework traces back to Buffett himself, who founded his Singing for Change foundation in 1995 to fund grassroots community, environmental and youth programs through 1% of his concert ticket sales, according to Seatrade Cruise News.
San Diego city leaders proclaimed August 29 as the official Margaritaville San Diego Day of Service. That local designation is separate from Florida's statewide law, passed in 2024, which set aside August 30 as Jimmy Buffett Day and renamed a stretch of State Road A1A in the singer's honor, according to CBS News.
From Boutique Hotel to Tropical Rooftop
The Gaslamp Quarter hotel hosting the celebration has its own recent transformation story. Margaritaville Hotel San Diego opened in August 2023 after a $30 million renovation and reflagging of the former Hotel Solamar, marking the lifestyle brand's first city-center property on the West Coast, according to Travel Weekly.
Owned by Pebblebrook Hotel Trust, the 10-story hotel has 235 guest rooms, 13,000 square feet of event space and San Diego's largest rooftop pool deck, home to the 5 o'Clock Somewhere Bar, per Pebblebrook Hotel Trust. The property sits within two blocks of Petco Park and the San Diego Convention Center, placing it at a crossroads of downtown's tourism and entertainment scene, as Hotel Management has reported.
The Nonprofit's Bigger Stage
The San Diego Music Foundation's flagship annual fundraiser is the San Diego Music Awards, which marked its 35th ceremony on May 6, 2026, at Humphreys by the Bay, spotlighting local rock, jazz and hip-hop talent, per the San Diego Music Awards' own program notes.
The Gaslamp Quarter celebration follows the same brand-wide pattern seen elsewhere, including a Day of Service in Orlando in 2024, when a sister property built a similar community celebration into its Labor Day Weekend programming. This year, it's downtown San Diego's turn to raise a glass for a good cause.
