Clear skies and temperatures in the low 80s greeted Memphis early Friday, but the afternoon forecast is far more punishing. Highs are expected to reach 102 degrees, with heat-index values climbing as high as 113 and little chance of rain to break the spell.
Heat Builds Through Sunday
A Heat Advisory is in effect for Memphis through 8 p.m. Sunday as hot temperatures and humidity raise the risk of heat-related illness. The National Weather Service advises residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air conditioning when possible, avoid direct sun and check on relatives and neighbors.
Friday night will remain warm, with a low around 79 and heat-index values still reaching about 110. Saturday should again hit 102, followed by Sunday’s hottest forecast high of 103; southwest winds around 5 to 10 mph will offer little relief.
Small Storm Chance Arrives Monday
The mostly dry pattern finally gets a minor interruption Monday, when a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms develops after 1 p.m. Rain chances are only 20%, however, and the high is still expected to reach 101 before temperatures ease toward the upper 90s.
Tuesday brings a modest dip to around 97 degrees, but the heat returns with highs near 100 Wednesday and 99 Thursday. Rain chances remain low through the rest of the week, so Memphis residents should plan for several more days of intense sunshine rather than a meaningful washout.
Warm Nights Will Limit Recovery
Overnight lows near 79 to 81 degrees will keep homes, pavement and bodies from cooling down much before the next day’s heat arrives.
