Lawn chairs and blankets are the required gear for Middletown's free Airshow Tailgate, set to take over Middletown Regional Airport on Saturday, August 22, from 5 to 9 p.m. Gates open at 5 p.m., the show kicks off at 6 p.m., and organizers promise high-flying loops and stunt maneuvers overhead while food trucks and music keep things going on the ground.
The event was announced by the City of Middletown, Ohio - City Hall in a Facebook post, which lists a lineup of local food vendors serving the crowd, including Top's Best Foods, Squeaky Wheels Cups & Cones, Hangry Bird, Big Dog's Pizza, and Irie Smoothie Cafe. The city is directing attendees to cityofmiddletown.org/744/10057/airshow-tailgate for the full schedule and arrival routes ahead of the Saturday event.
Notably, the tailgate's hours overlap almost exactly with Hops in the Hangar, an annual craft beer and aviation festival also happening at the airport that same evening from 4 to 9 p.m., according to Dayton Local. That 21-and-over ticketed event features more than 30 breweries, its own food trucks, and professional skydiving displays, meaning the same airfield will be hosting both a free family tailgate and a beer festival with aerial jumps at once.
A Runway Built for Big Aircraft
Middletown Regional Airport, known locally as Hook Field, isn't just any small-town airstrip. Its 6,100-foot asphalt runway is the longest non-towered runway in Southwest Ohio, capable of handling aircraft as large as Boeing 757s, according to the City of Middletown. Situated between Cincinnati and Dayton, the city-owned general aviation airport operates around the clock.
The airfield has also become a hub for skydiving. It's home to Start Skydiving and Team Fastrax, a professional skydiving demonstration team that performs globally and holds world records for giant U.S. flag jumps. Just weeks ago, the airport made headlines again when 103-year-old Middletown resident Evelyn Franks set the Ohio state record for oldest person to skydive during a tandem jump at Start Skydiving on July 31.
Decades of Aerospace History at Hook Field
The airport traces its roots to 1925, when local business leaders founded it as Middletown Airport Park. The city purchased it in 1940, and it was renamed Hook Field Municipal Airport in May 1949 in honor of Armco Steel executive Charles R. Hook, before adopting its current regional name in 2008.
That same year the city took ownership, 1940, Aeronca Aircraft Corporation moved its operations next to the field. The company went on to produce more than 17,000 light airplanes through 1951 and later manufactured steel honeycomb panels for NASA's Apollo command modules, a legacy of aerospace manufacturing that still echoes today through Aeronca's successor company, Magellan Aerospace, which continues operating adjacent to the airport.
Modern Investment Keeps the Airfield Growing
The airshow tailgate arrives amid a wave of modernization at Hook Field. In March, Butler Tech officially opened a $15 million, 28,000-square-foot Aviation Center hangar complex adjacent to the airport, designed to train up to 150 to 200 high school students annually in piloting and aircraft maintenance, as Hoodline reported in its piece on the ribbon-cutting for the aviation hangar.
That construction followed a July 2024 funding push that included a $1 million grant from the JobsOhio Site Inventory Program, $7 million from Butler County commissioners, and $500,000 from the City of Middletown, according to JobsOhio. Regional planners are also looking further ahead: in March 2025, the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments selected Middletown Regional Airport as one of five Southwest Ohio general aviation facilities to receive utility planning for Advanced Air Mobility and electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, according to the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments.
The Airshow Tailgate is one stop on the city's broader 2026 community events calendar, which also includes the Rafts & Crafts event held on August 8, the 25th Anniversary 9/11 5K Run on September 12, and the Spooky Car Show on October 24. For now, though, all eyes are on Hook Field for a Saturday evening of stunt flying, food trucks, and a runway shared with a beer festival happening right alongside it.
