A 64-year-old bicyclist was killed Friday evening on Milwaukee’s West Vliet Street, and the driver who struck them fled the scene. Police are now asking anyone who witnessed the collision or knows anything about the vehicle to come forward.
The crash happened at about 5:40 p.m. near the 1700 block of West Vliet Street, according to a Milwaukee Police Department release carried by Urban Milwaukee. Investigators said the vehicle was traveling north on North 17th Street when it struck the bicyclist, who was crossing Vliet Street westbound.
Police Say Driver Left Before Help Arrived
The bicyclist suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the crash scene, police said. The department has not publicly identified the victim or announced a suspect in the hit-and-run investigation.
The fatality comes as Milwaukee continues tracking serious crashes through its Vision Zero program. According to Milwaukee’s Vision Zero program, the city adopted the policy in 2022 and maintains a dashboard for police-reported crashes involving people walking, biking and riding motorcycles, though officials warn the data can take up to two months to appear.
Milwaukee has seen another deadly bicycle collision recently. Hoodline reported that a bicyclist was fatally struck by a bus near downtown’s Kilbourn Avenue and Jackson Street on July 19.
