Mizzou Student Critically Hurt After Falling From Harpo's Rooftop Bar in Columbia

A University of Missouri student remained in critical condition Monday after falling from the rooftop bar at Harpo's Bar and Grill in downtown Columbia, just hours before the start of Mizzou's fall semester. The Columbia Police Department was called to assist paramedics at the bar, located at 29 S. 10th St., just after 9 p.m. Sunday, according to KMZU.

The victim, identified only as a Chillicothe man, attended Chillicothe High School before enrolling at the University of Missouri, according to his Facebook page and reporting by the Kansas City Star. Chillicothe sits about an hour and a half northeast of Kansas City. His mother wrote on Facebook that her son was unconscious after the fall, pleading, “Parents hug your babies tight and everyone please send up some thoughts and prayers for my baby and those working on him!” He was taken to a hospital following the incident.

Witnesses Describe Fall From Rooftop Railing

An eyewitness account reported by ABC 17 News indicates the student was sitting on the railing of the rooftop bar when he leaned back and fell over. Harpo's, a bar known for catering to Mizzou students, operates six distinct indoor and outdoor gathering spaces, including its rooftop venue known as Skyy Bar, which holds an official capacity of approximately 200 patrons, as reported by Harpo's.

Columbia Police Department spokesperson Brian McNeill has been named in connection with the department's response, though no further details on the investigation have been made public. Columbia Police temporarily blocked off the intersection of 10th Street and Walnut Street directly outside Harpo's on Sunday night as first responders processed the scene, according to KOMU 8, before clearing the area by 10:43 p.m.

The fall happened just hours before the University of Missouri officially began Fall 2026 semester classes Monday, a period marked by heavy crowding at popular off-campus venues during move-in weekend, per the university's academic calendar. Mizzou projected a total fall enrollment exceeding 31,650 students for the term, welcoming 9,138 new incoming Tigers to the Columbia campus, according to the university's own figures.

Harpo's has deep roots in campus culture. Founded in 1971 by Mizzou alumnus Dennis Harper, the bar became famous for a long-standing tradition in which fans carrying torn-down goalposts from Faurot Field would march them through campus to the bar after a Tigers home football victory, according to background compiled on Wikipedia.

Under International Building Code guidelines adopted across commercial construction standards in Missouri, open-sided elevated walking surfaces such as rooftop bars and balconies are required to have protective guardrails at least 42 inches in height, per the International Code Council.
