Detroit is waking up to a soggy and potentially dangerous day, with showers and thunderstorms expected to bring heavy rain through the afternoon. The city could see a brief taste of summer thunderstorm season followed by a much calmer, sunnier stretch starting tomorrow.
A Flood Watch is in effect through 5 p.m. today for Detroit and much of southeast Michigan. The National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac office says rainfall could reach 1 to 2 inches in just two to three hours, with locally higher amounts and totals near or above 3 inches possible in the watch area.
Rain and embedded thunderstorms are expected to be most persistent this morning, with a gradual decrease after about 2 p.m. today. Temperatures should rise from the upper 60s into the upper 70s, while northeast winds of 9 to 14 mph could gust as high as 22 mph, according to the National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac.
Flooding Risk Highest In Urban Areas
The heaviest downpours could quickly overwhelm poor-drainage areas, flood streets and push creeks and rivers higher. Drivers should avoid water-covered roads and keep an eye out for any Flood Warnings issued during the day, especially through early afternoon.
Tonight will stay mostly cloudy, with a low near 62 and north-northeast winds gusting up to 23 mph. Conditions improve sharply tomorrow, when Detroit is forecast to be sunny with a high near 81, followed by another sunny day on Tuesday near 84.
Heat Builds Before Rain Returns
Wednesday looks to be the warmest day of the week so far, with sunshine and a high near 87. A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms returns late Wednesday night, followed by more unsettled weather Thursday and Friday, with temperatures remaining in the mid-80s.
