A motorcyclist was killed today in a crash that shut down two lanes of southbound Highway 101 in East Palo Alto, snarling the morning commute for hours. The California Highway Patrol reported the crash occurred just after 6 AM near University Avenue, with the rider found on the ground in the far right lane.
The two right lanes of southbound 101 remained closed south of University Avenue as of 6:30 AM, according to KRON4, which cited CHP's incident log for the crash timeline. The on-ramp to southbound 101 from University Avenue was also blocked, and motorists were advised to expect delays in the area. CHP estimated the lanes would reopen around 9 a.m.
A Familiar and Dangerous Stretch of 101
The California Highway Patrol's Redwood City Area office holds primary jurisdiction over crash investigations along this stretch of U.S. 101 through East Palo Alto and central San Mateo County. This is not the first deadly wreck near the University Avenue interchange: in August 2025, a four-car chain-reaction crash on northbound 101 near the same interchange killed a 62-year-old woman and injured four others, leading to a suspect's arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence, as reported by KTVU.
Just this past January, a fatal hit-and-run pedestrian collision claimed the life of an unhoused man in his 60s on the Embarcadero Road on-ramp to southbound 101 in neighboring Palo Alto, a case Hoodline covered in its earlier reporting. Highway ramps along the Palo Alto–East Palo Alto border see heavy commuter weaving during morning peak hours, a pattern that has repeatedly put pedestrians and riders at risk along this corridor.
Why Victim Identification Takes Time
As of this morning, the motorcyclist's identity had not been released. Under San Mateo County protocols, fatal traffic collisions fall under the jurisdiction of the county coroner's office, which conducts forensic autopsies, establishes formal identification, and notifies next of kin before any name is made public. It remains unknown whether another vehicle was involved in the crash or whether the motorcyclist went down alone, and that detail has not yet been addressed by investigators.
Motorcyclists Remain Disproportionately at Risk
The crash adds to a grim statewide pattern. Data published in mid-2025 by the California Office of Traffic Safety and UC Berkeley's SafeTREC program found that 583 motorcyclists were killed in California in 2023, accounting for roughly 14% of all traffic fatalities statewide despite motorcycles making up a much smaller share of vehicles on the road. That figure actually marked a 10.2% improvement from 649 motorcyclist deaths in 2022, the state's largest single-year safety gain among tracked vehicle categories, though fatalities remain above 2019 levels.
State law under California Vehicle Code Section 21658.1 permits motorcycle lane splitting between rows of stopped or moving traffic, with CHP guidance recommending riders keep speed differentials under 10 mph relative to surrounding vehicles. Separately, Vehicle Code Section 27803 has required helmets for all motorcycle drivers and passengers on public roads since 1992. Whether lane splitting, speed, or visibility played any role in Thursday's crash has not been determined.
Enforcement Push Already Underway
The fatal crash comes amid a broader local enforcement effort. Earlier this month, CHP's Redwood City office and the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office ran joint traffic safety operations across county corridors that resulted in 117 citations aimed at curbing reckless driving and speed-related crashes. The University Avenue interchange itself received major infrastructure upgrades in 2019, when the San Mateo County Transportation Authority widened off-ramps and added a dedicated bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing to ease severe queueing and traffic weaving at the site, which links East Palo Alto, Palo Alto, and the Dumbarton Bridge corridor.
CHP has not released further details on what caused today's crash, and the investigation remains active. Commuters in the area should continue to expect delays as officers work the scene near University Avenue.
