
Muon Space, the Mountain View satellite manufacturer that already has 11 spacecraft in orbit, has closed a $250 million funding round backed by Alphabet Inc.'s Google and Salesforce Ventures, pushing the company's total equity funding past $386 million. The company shared the funding news in a statement with Bloomberg, and the round was led by Eclipse Capital.
The Series C raise, first reported by Bloomberg, marks a major leap for a company founded just five years ago in 2021. Muon Space plans to use the new capital to accelerate satellite production and invest in orbital AI computing capabilities, according to the company's statement. Private secondary market data from Forge Global has since pegged the company's valuation at roughly $1.53 billion following the round, officially making Muon Space a unicorn.
From Mountain View HQ to a San Jose Production Line
The fresh funding arrives just weeks after Muon Space flipped the switch on a new 130,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in San Jose, a plant the company says is capable of producing up to 500 satellites a year in the 100 kg to 500 kg class. The facility, which the company detailed in a June press release, represents a significant scale-up from Muon Space's Mountain View headquarters toward high-rate production. It's a build-out that matters locally: the company has said it doubled its staff count in 2025 alone as it shifted toward continuous, multi-mission constellation manufacturing.
That shift is central to what the company calls its “Mission Foundry” approach — moving away from custom, one-off satellite builds toward standardized, software-defined spacecraft produced at volume. In February, Muon Space reported more than 100 percent year-over-year revenue growth for the second straight year, with 20 satellites slated for launch over the following 20 months.
Wildfire Satellites Already Circling the Globe
Much of Muon Space's public profile so far has come from its work on FireSat, a wildfire-detection satellite network built for the non-profit Earth Fire Alliance with backing from Google.org and the Bezos Earth Fund. Hoodline previously reported on the launch of the first three operational FireSat microsatellites, which rode SpaceX's Transporter-17 mission into low Earth orbit on July 7.
According to Google Research, the FireSat network is designed to eventually grow to more than 50 satellites, delivering near-real-time global updates every 20 minutes and spotting wildfires as small as 5 by 5 meters with multispectral sensors — a dramatic jump from legacy satellite systems that often only refresh imagery a few times a day. The Earth Fire Alliance has said the network was built through a public-private-philanthropic coalition, and the FireSat milestone underscores why Google's continued financial backing of Muon Space runs deeper than a single funding round.
A Defense Portfolio Growing Alongside the Climate Work
Muon Space's satellites aren't only watching for fires. The U.S. Space Force awarded the company a $44.6 million SBIR Phase III contract in October 2025, issued through Space Systems Command's System Delta 810, to adapt its commercial payload for prototype satellites tracking military theater weather and cloud characterization, per SatNow. Months earlier, in May 2025, Muon Space secured a Stage II award under the National Reconnaissance Office's Strategic Commercial Enhancements framework to demonstrate multispectral electro-optical and infrared satellite data for national security purposes, following its initial onboarding with the agency in 2023.
Early this year, the company was also selected for the Missile Defense Agency's SHIELD contract program, an effort with an overall ceiling of $151 billion aimed at folding commercial space-based sensing into missile defense architecture, according to SmallSat News. Taken together, the contracts point to a dual-use strategy in which the same sensing technology built for wildfire detection is being adapted for military weather tracking and defense applications.
Executive Ties to Google Run Deep
Muon Space CEO and co-founder Jonny Dyer previously served as Chief Engineer at Skybox Imaging before Google acquired that satellite company for $500 million in 2014, and he later led Google Maps' aerial and Street View data collection team, according to background shared through ASCEND. Those ties help explain why Google has remained a repeat backer of Muon Space, from its involvement in the FireSat coalition through its participation in the new Series C round.
The Series C follows a $146 million Series B round the company closed in June 2025, a raise that came alongside its acquisition of satellite propulsion startup Starlight Engines, founded in 2022 by former Apollo Fusion engineers, to bring zinc-fueled Hall thrusters in-house, as reported by Payload Space. With the new capital and a high-volume San Jose facility now open, Muon Space faces the task of scaling to meet its manifest of 20 satellite launches while competing in the increasingly crowded orbital compute and satellite imagery markets.
