A pre-dawn fire tore through a home on Minnesota’s Whiteface Reservoir Tuesday, forcing two residents and two dogs to flee as flames consumed the structure. One resident was checked by medical personnel and was ultimately reported to be OK.
Several fire departments responded around 2:42 a.m. after neighbors reported hearing a very loud boom, according to KSTP. By the time crews arrived, the home was fully engulfed, and the fire spread throughout the structure.
The two people inside escaped before the flames reached the entire home, officials said. The property was destroyed, but there were no reported deaths in the fire and both dogs also made it out safely.
Lightning Is A Lead, Not A Verdict
Investigators believe a lightning strike might have started the blaze, though the cause has not been finalized. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office are handling the investigation.
The fire comes during a difficult summer for northeastern Minnesota, where dry conditions and lightning have fueled a broader wave of wildfire activity. In a July 12 announcement, the Office of Governor Tim Walz said multiple fires had ignited across Koochiching, Lake and St. Louis counties, prompting a peacetime emergency and additional state assistance.
Northern Minnesota Fire Risk Remains A Concern
The Minnesota Interagency Fire Center has continued issuing updates on July lightning incidents, fire restrictions and changing conditions across the region. Its recent incident updates show how quickly lightning and dry fuels have complicated firefighting efforts this season.
For the Whiteface Reservoir residents, the immediate emergency ended with an escape rather than a loss of life. Investigators will now work through the remains to determine whether lightning was responsible for the home’s destruction.
