A Nigerian restaurant is set to open its doors on San Antonio's East Side next month, taking over the building that housed a beloved barbecue spot for a decade. Oringo Africana will open at noon on September 5 at 1701 E. Houston St., bringing dishes like suya tacos, egusi soup, and stretchy fufu made from yam-based poundo flour to the historic Dignowity Hill neighborhood.
The restaurant is the brainchild of chef Ugochukwu Ijoma, who is originally from Arochukwu, Nigeria, according to CultureMap San Antonio. Oringo Africana started small, as a cottage take-out business, before expanding into a food truck at 9501 Computer Dr. Now it's making the leap to a full sit-down restaurant, joining what the outlet describes as only a handful of African restaurants currently operating in San Antonio.
The address carries some local history. The building spent ten years as the home of Dignowity Meats, a barbecue destination that closed for good on December 30, 2024, according to KSAT. That restaurant was originally founded in 2014 by co-owners Andrew Samia, Shane Reed, Denise Aguirre, and Noel Cisneros, and it earned national attention after appearing on the Food Network's “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” per the San Antonio Current.
From Home Kitchen to Storefront
Before Oringo Africana had a truck or a storefront, it operated as a home-based pickup and delivery service out of 111 Probandt Street, according to a Facebook post detailing the business's progression. Ahead of the storefront opening, the restaurant highlighted egusi soup served with fufu as its top-selling item on social media, alongside dishes including okro stew, fried tilapia with plantains, and efo riro, a leafy vegetable stew. Jollof rice with chicken will also be on the menu, per CultureMap's reporting.
Suya, meanwhile, is described as thin-sliced skewered grilled beef coated in a ground-peanut and spice blend, and it's showing up on the menu in taco form as one of the restaurant's signature offerings. Oringo Africana has not yet publicized its regular operating hours beyond the noon opening time planned for the grand opening.
A Neighborhood Steeped in History
Dignowity Hill was officially designated a San Antonio local historic district on December 8, 1983, making it one of the city's earliest protected residential neighborhoods, according to the San Antonio Express-News. The near East Side corridor surrounding it is also part of a 120-acre innovation district framework backed by municipal and development leaders aiming to spur commercial growth while preserving the area's historic character, per prior San Antonio Report coverage.
Oringo Africana won't be the only place in town serving West African flavors. Ultra Kitchen serves Nigerian food at 7870 Culebra Rd., while AfroTex Grill offers a West African-Texas fusion menu with jollof rice bowls, suya-spiced chicken, and suya burritos, according to the restaurant's own site. Still, the broader dining landscape reflects a demographic reality: Texas is home to the largest Nigerian community in the country, with roughly 117,000 residents of Nigerian origin as of the 2020 census, per the U.S. Census Bureau.
Part of a Wider Culinary Wave
Oringo Africana's opening also fits into a larger national pattern of West African cuisine breaking into mainstream dining, with high-profile concepts like Dept. of Culture in Brooklyn and ChòpnBlọk in Houston leading the charge, as CultureMap's report notes. San Antonio itself carries a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy designation, earned in 2017 as one of only two U.S. cities honored for culinary heritage and food diversity, according to the city's official tourism office.
The trend has already shown up elsewhere in Hoodline's coverage area.
