Oklahoma City is waking to a hot Tuesday that will quickly become dangerous, with temperatures climbing from the mid-70s early in the morning to around 105 degrees by late afternoon. The heat index could reach 110 under sunny skies, making outdoor plans especially punishing during the afternoon.
Ozone Alert Adds Another Reason To Limit Afternoon Exposure
The National Weather Service expects mostly sunny conditions after a small early chance of showers or thunderstorms, with north-northwest winds increasing to 5 to 12 mph. An Air Quality Alert for ozone is also in effect across the Oklahoma City metropolitan area from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality.
People with heart or respiratory conditions are encouraged to reduce strenuous activity and time outdoors. Officials also recommend avoiding unnecessary driving, refueling during the morning and early afternoon, outdoor burning and the use of two-cycle engines such as lawn mowers and weed trimmers.
Cooler Air Moves In Wednesday
Tuesday night will remain warm, with a low near 76 and a slight chance of rain showers after 1 a.m. North winds could gust as high as 18 mph, while any rainfall is expected to stay light.
Wednesday brings a noticeable, if temporary, break from the triple-digit heat. The high should reach about 95 degrees with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms through early afternoon, followed by a mostly clear night and a low near 74.
Triple-Digit Heat Returns This Weekend
Thursday should be mostly sunny with a high near 93, but the forecast turns hotter again Friday through Monday. Highs are expected to reach 96 Friday, 100 Saturday and 101 Sunday and Monday, with south winds around 15 mph by the start of next week, according to the National Weather Service.
For anyone working or exercising outdoors, the safest window will be early in the day before the heat and ozone levels build. Take frequent breaks in air conditioning or shade, drink water regularly and do not leave children or pets in parked vehicles.
