Oklahoma City is starting Monday clear, with temperatures already in the low 80s before sunrise, but the worst of the heat is still charging in. The forecast calls for a high near 107 degrees, with an Extreme Heat Warning in effect from noon to 8 p.m. as heat-index values could reach 110.
Extreme Heat Peaks Monday Afternoon
The warning covers Oklahoma County and much of central Oklahoma, where dangerously hot conditions could cause heat illness. The National Weather Service advises residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air conditioning, avoid direct sun and check on relatives and neighbors.
Temperatures are expected to climb quickly, reaching the upper 90s by midday and around 105 degrees during the late afternoon. Winds will run generally from the southwest at 7 to 13 mph, with gusts up to 21 mph, offering little relief from the heat.
Storms Could Bring Damaging Wind Gusts
Rain is unlikely but not impossible, with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4 p.m. and a 20% chance overall. The weather service says isolated storms near the front and along the I-40 corridor could produce damaging wind gusts, with winds shifting toward the west and north as the front moves through.
Dry air and gusty winds will also create elevated fire-weather conditions across parts of central and southern Oklahoma. Residents should avoid outdoor burning and use extra caution with anything that could spark a grass or brush fire.
A Cooler Midweek Stretch Arrives
Monday night will remain warm, with a low near 77 and lingering heat-index values as high as 108 before skies clear. Tuesday should be mostly sunny with a high near 101, followed by a noticeable dip to about 94 on Wednesday and Thursday.
The relief will be temporary. Friday is expected to reach 97 degrees, with sunny skies, while Saturday and Sunday climb back to around 100 and 102, respectively, under mostly sunny conditions.
