Atlanta is getting a cafe where chai is treated less like a syrupy coffee-shop add-on and more like the main event. The Chai Box Cafe in West Midtown is pairing family recipes, Indian tea-stall traditions and a full pastry-and-coffee program as it heads into its grand-opening moment this week.
The family-owned shop opened its first brick-and-mortar location in June, after The Chai Box built a following as a packaged chai brand. 11Alive reported on the cafe’s opening and its mission to preserve cultural connections, while The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that the grand opening and ribbon-cutting are planned for Friday with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens.
A Chai Stall Idea Lands In West Midtown
The concept comes from founder Monica Sunny, who created the cafe to echo Indian tea stalls — neighborhood gathering spots where people share stories over chai. The Chai Box’s own cafe description says the space is built around the ritual and connection of chai, and bills it as Atlanta’s first chai cafe.
Sunny’s sons help customers connect the drinks to the flavors and traditions they grew up with, according to 11Alive. The cafe’s pastry program is led by Amber Latimore, a Black executive pastry chef whose work adds another layer to a menu designed to reflect more than one culinary tradition.
Chai, Kaapi And Pastries Share The Counter
The menu ranges from rotating loose-leaf chai blends and Indian-inspired drinks to espresso beverages, matcha and kaapi, the South Indian style of filter coffee. A preview by Atlanta Coffee Shops identified Driftaway Coffee as the cafe’s roasting partner and highlighted the shop’s house-made pastries alongside vegan offerings from Flour + Time Bakery.
That gives the cafe a broader lane than a standard tea counter: a customer can come in for a familiar masala chai, stay for a pastry, or use the space as a coffee stop without losing the South Asian point of view. The result is a menu built for both people seeking a taste of home and curious customers who are still learning what chai can be.
A National Brand Gets A Neighborhood Home
The cafe also marks a new chapter for The Chai Box, which has already earned national attention through Oprah’s Favorite Things and other food-media coverage, as detailed by Oprah Daily. Moving from online sales and retail shelves to a neighborhood storefront gives Sunny’s family recipe a place where the ritual can be experienced in real time, not just brewed at home.
For customers, the appeal is straightforward: a familiar neighborhood stop with a distinct cultural point of view. The cafe is trying to make chai feel less like a flavor choice on a menu and more like a reason to slow down, which is a fairly good argument for keeping one’s morning schedule flexible.
The Chai Box Cafe’s website currently lists hours of 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, with Mondays closed. The cafe is in West Midtown on Howell Mill Road, turning a longtime family ritual into Atlanta’s newest gathering place.
