A 50-year-old Pacific man died and a 45-year-old Fulton woman was injured Wednesday evening when their SUV left the roadway and overturned on U.S. Highway 50 at Lakota Lane in eastern Jackson County. The driver was pronounced dead at the hospital roughly an hour after the crash, while his passenger was hospitalized for treatment. Both had been wearing seat belts at the time of the wreck.
According to KTTN, the crash happened around 6:45 p.m. as a 2004 Buick Rendezvous was traveling west on Highway 50 near Lone Jack. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the SUV left the roadway on the left side before overturning. The vehicle was towed from the scene by Elite Tow and was declared a total loss.
Personnel from the Southern Jackson County Fire Protection District transported both the driver and passenger to Centerpoint Medical Center, the only Level II Trauma Center serving eastern Jackson County. The 50-year-old Pacific man was pronounced dead at the hospital at 7:41 p.m., per the patrol's report. His next of kin has since been notified of his death, the patrol says.
A Long Way From Home on a Rural Highway
Both occupants were far from their home turf when the crash occurred. The driver was from Pacific, while his passenger was from Fulton. Lakota Lane, where the wreck happened, intersects Highway 50 near Kidwell Business Park in Lone Jack, roughly 30 miles east of Kansas City, a stretch of the east-west corridor that carries long-distance travelers across the state.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol's Troop A, headquartered in Lee's Summit, is investigating the crash. Troop A serves 13 counties. The patrol says the wreck marked its 39th traffic fatality of 2026 and its 36th fatal crash of the year.
Seat Belts, Speed, and an Unanswered Question
What caused the Buick Rendezvous to leave the road remains unclear, and it is not yet known whether mechanical failure, road conditions, or driver impairment played a role. The patrol's Major Crash Investigation Unit uses Robotic Total Station technology, though it has not been confirmed whether a full reconstruction will be performed in this case.
