A Phoenix man called 911 to say a woman was refusing to leave his apartment and had threatened to have someone shoot him. Minutes later, police say, 58-year-old Donald Mucheck was shot outside the midtown complex—and nearly a month later, a 21-year-old woman and a 16-year-old have been arrested.
Phoenix police arrested Teralyn Campopiano and the unidentified teenager on Monday in connection with Mucheck’s death, according to Arizona’s Family. Campopiano was booked on one count of second-degree murder and is being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond, while the teenager was booked into juvenile detention.
Mucheck was found shot near 16th Street and Camelback Road around 12:30 a.m. July 6 and later died at a hospital, KTAR News reported. Hoodline’s earlier scene report noted that investigators initially released few details about the fatal shooting.
Police Say A Payment Dispute Turned Violent
Court documents say Mucheck had arranged to pay Campopiano for sexual services and had sent an Uber to pick her up. Investigators found text messages between the two, with Campopiano allegedly using the name Nicole; after an earlier encounter, Mucheck accused her of stealing his money, but police say they arranged another meeting.
According to Arizona’s Family, Campopiano arrived with the 16-year-old and another woman. Mucheck told dispatchers Campopiano would not leave, that he feared she might rob him and that she had threatened to have someone shoot him.
The woman who accompanied Campopiano later told police she saw Campopiano and Mucheck arguing over payment before Campopiano and the teenager began attacking him. She said she heard a gunshot as she walked away and was later told by Campopiano that the teenager had fired it, according to court documents.
Campopiano Remains Held As Case Moves Forward
Campopiano remains jailed on the murder allegation, while the teenager’s case is being handled through the juvenile system. The allegations have not been tested in court, and an arrest is not a conviction; prosecutors will have to prove the charges as the case proceeds.
