A man was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition Thursday evening after being shot multiple times on the 500 block of Callender Street in Baltimore's Pigtown neighborhood. Baltimore Police officers responded to a reported firearm discharge around 5:30 p.m. and found the unidentified male victim suffering from gunshot wounds to the body before medics transported him for treatment.
Detectives are investigating the shooting, according to FOX45 News, which reported that officers located the victim after responding to the reported gunfire. Southern District shooting detectives are asking anyone with information to call 410-396-2499. A Block With a Violent History
Thursday's shooting is not the first time gunfire has erupted on this stretch of Callender Street. Southern District shooting detectives previously responded to a reported firearm discharge on the same block back on April 1, 2023, according to a Baltimore Police Department media advisory documenting district shooting detective activity there.
More seriously, the block was the scene of a fatal shooting on October 15, 2025, that claimed the life of 29-year-old Darrius Hines, who court records indicate suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Baltimore Police arrested 23-year-old Darrien Robinson Jr. in February 2026 on first-degree murder charges in that case, as reported by Daily Voice. Robinson rejected a plea deal during a June 2026 Baltimore City Circuit Court reception hearing, per the Baltimore Witness, and is now scheduled to stand trial on October 26, 2026, with city surveillance footage cited in court records during the proceeding.
Citywide Gains Contrast With Local Hotspots
The Callender Street shooting comes even as Baltimore posts historic citywide improvements in violent crime. The city recorded seven homicides in July 2026, the lowest July total in recorded city history, while police recovered 1,189 firearms and made 743 gun arrests through August 1, as Hoodline detailed in its coverage of an East Baltimore shooting the same week. Non-fatal shootings citywide through August 3 stood at 187, a slight decrease from 190 during the same period in 2025.

City officials attribute part of the drop to Mayor Brandon Scott's Group Violence Reduction Strategy, which expanded into the Southern District — the police district that includes Pigtown — in July 2025 to pair law enforcement deterrence with social services and life coaching. Maryland's congressional delegation secured nearly $1.2 million in federal community project funding in May 2026 through the Department of Justice to support that expansion, funding requested by Rep. Kweisi Mfume under FY26 appropriations.
Pigtown's Recent Run of Violence
Despite those citywide gains, Pigtown has seen repeated violent crime in recent months. In May 2026, a Baltimore judge consolidated two murder prosecutions stemming from a January 2024 shooting outside a Pigtown barber shop on Washington Boulevard, a case that followed a fatal shooting and subsequent interstate police pursuit onto I-95, according to prior Hoodline reporting. Trial scheduling in that case remains on hold while the co-defendants face a joint trial.
