A welfare check at a home in the 4600 block of Jefferson Court in Pleasanton ended in the discovery of two bodies Wednesday evening, after a neighbor said they had been unable to reach the residents for several days. Police say 39-year-old tenant Evgeniy Ilin fatally shot 64-year-old homeowner Shelly Wang before turning the gun on himself, in what investigators are treating as a suspected murder-suicide.
Officers responded to the call around 7:16 PM on Wednesday and found Wang dead from gunshot wounds, with Ilin found dead in a separate room, according to the KTVU report on the Pleasanton Police Department's investigation. Wang owned the home and had rented a room to Ilin, police said. As reported by SFGATE, officers discovered a handgun lying directly next to Ilin's body in the separate room where he was found.
Investigators believe the shootings occurred several days before officers actually entered the residence on Wednesday, per the same SFGATE report. That timeline lines up with the account of the neighbor who told police they had been unable to contact the home's tenants for several days leading up to the discovery.
Forensic Evidence Still Under Review
Pleasanton police recovered multiple shell casings near Wang's body at the scene, though complete autopsy results from the Alameda County Coroner remain necessary to confirm the exact number of gunshot wounds, a task complicated by the body's decomposition, according to Calitoday. Under California Government Code Section 27491, county coroners are statutorily required to determine the cause and manner of any sudden, violent, or unattended death, including suspected homicides and suicides.
Pleasanton police said the suspect's motive was not known, and the department has not said how long Ilin had been renting a room from Wang. The Pleasanton Police Department issued a public call for assistance, asking anyone with information about the residents or the incident to contact investigators at 925-931-5100. Police described the case as isolated and said it poses no ongoing threat to the community.
A Second East Bay Shooting the Same Night
The same evening the bodies were discovered in Pleasanton, officers responded to an unrelated fatal shooting in nearby unincorporated San Ramon that left one person dead and another hospitalized. Pleasanton police confirmed that the incident had no connection to the Jefferson Court case, according to Patch.
The Jefferson Court home sits in Pleasanton's Val Vista subdivision, a suburban neighborhood of single-family detached homes built primarily in the mid-1970s, according to real estate records from Compass Real Estate. Homes in the area average between 1,300 and 1,800 square feet.
A Rare but Not Unprecedented Case for Pleasanton
This marks the second isolated domestic double-fatality shooting in Pleasanton so far this year. In February, police investigated another double homicide on Joanne Circle, where a 67-year-old mother and her 28-year-old son were fatally shot inside their home; an arrest was later made in that case, Patch reported at the time.
Violent crime remains rare in the city overall. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting data compiled by OpenCrime shows Pleasanton recorded just one homicide in 2024, with a violent crime rate of 115.0 per 100,000 residents — about 68% lower than the national average — out of 84 total violent crime incidents across a population of roughly 73,000.
