Charlotte is waking up under mostly cloudy skies Thursday, with temperatures around 71 degrees and a high near 88. The morning should turn mostly sunny and hot, but afternoon storms are expected to interrupt the day before the weekend settles into a warmer pattern.
Afternoon Storms Could Bring Heavy Rain
Temperatures will climb from the low 70s early Thursday to the low 80s around noon and the upper 80s during the afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms become possible after 1 p.m., with the rain chance peaking near 50% around midafternoon and expected rainfall of roughly a tenth to a quarter of an inch.
The National Weather Service's Greenville-Spartanburg office says a few storms could produce brief heavy downpours and gusty, possibly damaging winds. Isolated flash flooding and a stronger storm or two remain possible across the region through Saturday, although no watches, warnings or advisories are listed for Charlotte in the current forecast.
Hotter Weekend And A Toasty Start Next Week
Friday will look similar, with mostly sunny skies, a high near 88 and a 30% chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Saturday pushes closer to 90 with another chance of storms after 2 p.m., while overnight lows stay in the low 70s.
Sunday climbs to about 91, followed by highs near 92 Monday and 93 Tuesday and Wednesday. The forecast discussion says heat-index readings could approach the low 100s next week, so outdoor plans may be most comfortable in the morning before the combination of heat and humidity builds.
