A three-day event billed as the Monumental Experience Wellness Weekend lands in Raleigh next weekend, opening Friday evening with a mental health-focused dinner and closing Sunday night with a networking social at a Glenwood South lounge. Organizer Charlie Williams designed the September 4-6 lineup to move attendees through mental wellness, fitness, and community connection over three consecutive days.
The weekend kicks off with the “Mind Your Mental” dinner at Sugar House on Glenwood Avenue from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, according to CBS 17. The dinner will feature a private chef leading discussions about mental wellness and meaningful conversation, and will give attendees networking opportunities with wellness-minded leaders, athletes, entrepreneurs, and community members. Sugar House itself is a relatively new addition to the Glenwood South corridor, having opened in early 2026 as a dessert and cocktail bar in the space that formerly housed Cortado coffee shop, according to a Reddit discussion among local residents.
Urban Run Club, described as a featured sponsor of the weekend, will join the Friday dinner as part of its role in the event. The nonprofit is a 501(c)(3) organization with nearly 1,000 active members that celebrates Black culture and promotes health, wellness, and community through free weekly runs in downtown Raleigh, according to the group's Heylo listing. Those runs are open to runners and walkers of all fitness levels.
Saturday Workout Aims to Widen the Gym's Reach
Saturday shifts the focus to physical activity with what organizers call the Monumental Movement, a fitness session running from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Workout Anytime Lake Wheeler, per the CBS 17 report. The session is intended to introduce the gym to a wider, more diverse audience while promoting community engagement through physical activity. Workout Anytime Lake Wheeler, located at 2720 Lake Wheeler Road in southwest Raleigh, is a 24-hour fitness club within the nationwide franchise, offering Matrix training equipment, certified personal training programs, and hydrotherapy and tanning amenities, according to the gym's website.
Organizers frame the Saturday session as more than a workout. Fitness relationships forged there, the event's messaging holds, can translate into business opportunities, creative partnerships, and professional development — a pitch that positions the gym floor as a networking space as much as an exercise one.
Sunday Social Closes Out the Weekend Downtown
The weekend wraps up Sunday with a networking social at Peace & Saint from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., bringing together entrepreneurs, professionals, creatives, fitness leaders, and community members. Peace & Saint, located at 616 St. Mary's Street in Glenwood South, operates as a cocktail and hookah lounge that hosts private events and VIP group gatherings, with locations in both Raleigh and Durham, according to the Downtown Raleigh Alliance.
Williams, who organizes the weekend, is a certified life coach, digital marketer, speaker, and author of the parable novel “Legacy is Monumental,” published on Lulu in February 2025 under the name Charlie Williams, who also operates as Malik Williams. The book explores themes of personal growth, self-discovery, and overcoming adversity — themes that echo through the event's branding. Speaking about the weekend's goals, Williams said attendees should leave fulfilled and feel heard and understood.
A Local Push Amid Statewide Mental Health Gaps
The event's mental health emphasis arrives as Wake County officials have flagged the issue as an urgent local concern. Mental health was designated one of the top three public health action priorities for 2025-2028 in Wake County's 2025 Community Health Needs Assessment, alongside affordable housing and healthcare access, according to Wake County government, with the assessment prepared in partnership with UNC Health, Duke Health, and local public health agencies.
The county-level concern reflects a wider statewide pattern. About 20% of North Carolina adults experienced a mental health condition in 2024, while nearly 25% reported unmet mental health care needs, according to a joint report from the UNC Behavioral Health Workforce Research Center and NCDHHS. The same report found that one-third of the state's public behavioral health positions remain unfilled.
Grassroots weekends like this one also fit into a much larger economic pattern. U.S. consumer spending on wellness reached $2.1 trillion in 2024, averaging $6,293 per person and accounting for 7.33% of national GDP, according to the Global Wellness Institute, which noted mental wellness as one of the fastest-growing sectors in the country. Globally, the wellness economy hit $6.8 trillion in 2024 and is projected to reach $9.8 trillion by 2029, growing faster than the overall global economy as more consumers shift toward preventive health practices.
Organizers say more information and updates on the Monumental Experience Wellness Weekend are available through the event's website. Open questions remain, including ticket pricing, expected attendance, and whether Williams plans to bring the event back annually or expand it to other cities.
