A 24-year-old motorcyclist died early Saturday after losing control near Commerce Street and North Avenue in Milwaukee's Riverwest neighborhood, according to police. The crash happened just before midnight, and the rider was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to WISN, the Milwaukee Police Department said the motorcyclist crashed after losing control of the bike, and investigators have not indicated that impairment played a role. The department is continuing to investigate the circumstances of the wreck, per the outlet's report.
The intersection sits along a stretch of North Avenue that the city has spent years trying to make safer. The Milwaukee Department of Public Works has run a rapid-implementation traffic-calming initiative along East North Avenue, adding protected bike lanes, bus bulbs, and concrete curb bump-outs meant to slow travel speeds through the East Side and Riverwest, according to the City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works. City leaders had earlier committed $3.9 million in tax incremental financing toward traffic-calming infrastructure and pedestrian safety upgrades along the corridor between Humboldt Boulevard and Prospect Avenue, as reported by the Milwaukee Record.
A Neighborhood Already Grieving a July 4 Loss
Saturday's crash marks the second fatal motorcycle wreck in Riverwest this summer. On July 4, a 29-year-old motorcyclist died in the neighborhood following a collision with a passenger car, and police arrested that vehicle's driver, as Hoodline previously reported. The two crashes, weeks apart, have renewed attention on rider safety in a part of the city that has also seen deadly motorcycle wrecks this summer at Teutonia and Finn, near Woods Road in Muskego, at the Marquette Interchange, and along I-794.
Wisconsin's Helmet Law and the Numbers Behind It
Under Wisconsin Statute 347.485, adult motorcycle riders are not required to wear a DOT-approved helmet unless they are under 18 or riding on an instructional permit, according to research compiled by the Pemberton Personal Injury Law Firm. The state repealed its universal helmet mandate in 1978. Federal and state safety studies cited by LawtonCates, S.C. indicate that helmets cut the risk of a fatal head injury by roughly 40 percent, yet nearly 70 percent of motorcyclists killed in Wisconsin crashes over a recent four-year tracking period were not wearing one.
Statewide, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's weekly fatality report shows 49 motorcycle drivers and three passengers died in traffic crashes between January 1 and August 2, 2026, compared with 52 drivers and three passengers over the same stretch in 2025. In Milwaukee specifically, the city's 2025 Traffic Violence Summary recorded eight motorcycle fatalities among 57 total traffic deaths that year.
Citywide Fatalities Are Down, But Motorcyclists Remain Vulnerable
Milwaukee's broader traffic safety picture has improved. Citywide traffic fatalities fell from 75 deaths in 2023 and 70 in 2024 to 54 preliminary deaths in 2025, according to the city's Vision Zero Annual Report, with municipal officials crediting new street designs and expanded traffic-calming measures. Milwaukee adopted its Vision Zero program in 2022, aiming to eliminate all severe and fatal traffic crashes by 2037.
Still, city data show that 53 percent of all traffic fatalities in 2025 happened on designated High Injury Network corridors, where speeding was a primary factor in 52 percent of deadly crashes. Statewide, impaired driving contributes to roughly 30 percent of fatal crashes and causes an average of 172 deaths a year, according to Wisconsin Department of Transportation figures — though in Saturday's Riverwest crash, initial police statements indicated impairment was not suspected.
