A 22-year-old man is facing charges after Bexar County sheriff’s deputies say an apparent disturbance on San Antonio’s far West Side escalated from an alleged assault on a woman to a confrontation with law enforcement. The woman reportedly ended up on the hood of his car as he drove away, and one deputy suffered a dislocated thumb during the detention. The suspect, Joab Abisal Navarrete, was also accused of driving while intoxicated.
According to a report by KENS 5, deputies responded to the 12000 block of Potranco Road after a woman called for help from inside a vehicle. Witnesses reportedly saw her on the hood before Navarrete drove off, and BCSO later located him.
Authorities said Navarrete showed clear signs of intoxication while driving. When deputies tried to detain him, he allegedly became combative, resisted arrest and tried to strike them, leading to the deputy’s thumb injury during the struggle.
Charges Include DWI And Assault On A Peace Officer
KENS 5 reported that Navarrete was charged with driving while intoxicated, assault causing bodily injury on a family member and assault on a peace officer. Under Texas Penal Code Section 22.01, assault causing bodily injury against a public servant lawfully performing official duties can be charged as a third-degree felony.
The initial account does not identify the woman or the deputy, and it does not say whether either person required hospital treatment. Navarrete has been accused, not convicted, and the charges will proceed through the Bexar County criminal court system.
